I bet you can buy a Micro Nikkor for that $299 or perhaps a little bit more. Remember that the Nikkor was specifically made for your camera and it is better built.

THAT is sooper important, do NOT overlook or underestimate its value.

The Nikon AF-D 60mm macro is a very common example of what to avoid ! If you know where to lay hands on one, just try manually focusing it in the normal use range. It’s waaaay too fast, it’s actually twitchy ! Just for the challenge of trying, switch into live view mode and crank up the MF magnifier.

This is not a rare problem. Since the Tokina avoids this curse, thaz another very good reason to get it.

I have a 60mm 2.8 D and this lens could do it all including macro I will never get rid of it, it is a solid lens , Nikon built a gem when they built this lens, very sharp lens. Go to the angry photographer's web site or look it up on I tube and see what he has to say about this lens.

Hey guys thinking about getting my first macro to go with my 7200. I found a like new Tokina 100mm for $299. What you think. I really value your "real world" opinions thanks.

I have had the ATXi version of this lens for about a year. I bought it used from MPB, I believe. May have been KEH. Any way I shoot it on both a Nikon D7100 and a D500. It is a very good lens. I have printed pictures taken with it up to 13x19 in size and they remain very sharp. I like it.

A little clunky, but it has proven to be a decent lens for my D750.

I have AF MicroNikkors that I’m pleased with and AF MicroNikkors that I regret owning. The name brand is no guarantee of a useful lens or of a great build.

Yes it is solid and sharp.

Unfortunately the helical is pitched waaay too steeply and is quite unsuitable for MF at normal distances. You called it a gem. Optically I agree, and will likely get the G version (if it solves the MF problem) to be the principal lens on my Z6.

As a macro lens, the fast helical provides faster AF in the macro range. Used as a general purpose long-ish normal there’s no problem at f:8, where critical focus is not required (or f:11 for DX cameras).

It is not useless ! But it is disappointing, because at first glance it appears to be a really great multipurpose normal lens. It needs a suitable focusing mechanism for those who appreciate its fine optics. But instead, it has the very opposite :-(

Plus one for the Tokina macro. Bought it on recommendation even though I already own a few other macros and macro zooms, from name brands including Nikon, Leica, Fuji. The Tokina rates up there with the rest, not a problem. Use with abandon!

Thanks for the info. I have watched the Angry guy's review and every review I could find. They all say the Tokina is excellent so I will probably go with it. Quick ? What do you think of Ken Rockwell's reviews?

Yea that's what I'm hearing about most macro lenses. Awhile back I tried out my friends Sigma 105. Not only was it slow it focus hunted like crazy. I plan to use manual focus anyway so should not be an issue

He PAYS for all his equip, so he is not beholding to any manufacturer. I often chkd out his reviews on something I was interested in, and find his reviews credible. Others will disagree.
