Love # 1 - were you camping out?

No, not camping; just out from home on what looked like would be a photogenic afternoon/evening. Haven't camped once since February --which has been, for me, really frustrating-- because its been WAY too hot to camp, and way too smoky and/or essentially 'boring' all this summer.

Beautiful captures --what did you use and how did you process these.

By asking 'what' I used, can I assume you meant what gear? Vehicle first, but a fair amount of fancy footwork (some places were reeeealy muddy) once I got to the spots I got to. Nikon D810 and a 24-70mm Nikkor. 90% of the processing was in Lr, the other 13% was in Ps. Various local adjustments that would be difficult to explain the 'why' of.

Never having been in the area after a sustained period of rain, I was blown away by the Island Mesa image. You continue to set the bar very high for the rest of us, and for that thank you very much. Between you, the Old Hippy and a few others the rest of us get an idea of what can be done with a camera and proper processing. Education never stops, which is as it should be!

First of all really great shots followed by wonderful processing. Because of the dark intense colors they remind me of Thomas Cole oils from the 1800s.

Very nice images! Some of your best, IMO. I also enjoyed your answers on the processing and natural colors in weather conditions.

Jim,

These are all outstanding! But I think you have outdone yourself with #1. The "window" effect of that shot, the lighting, the clouds, the water, the sharp details, etc., etc. are absolutely stunning to me.

Thanks--just wondering if this was a series of pictures stitched together of just one great exposure?

#1 is from a hundred feet to the right of the 'offical' Viewpoint area --i.e., the place the paved walkway leads to from the parking lot-- at Green River Overlook in the Island In The Sky district. The view in the pic is similar to, but wider than, the shot that had been used (throughout the '90's and up to about 2010) -on the park brochure visitors would be given when they arrived. I first saw/photographed the place in the middle '80's (before there was pavement), and since then -- the same as now-- have considered the place one of the most sublime places I know. Slightly off to the left of the official Viewpoint fence and stuff is a large hump of rock. Its there that Max von Sydow (in the role of Jesus) was positioned to give the 'sermon on the mount' in the 1965 movie 'The Greatest Story Ever Told.' "Blessed are the peacemakers....." with Turks Head, the Green River, Millard Canyon, the Orange Cliffs & etc. as a backdrop, all trying their best to look like the Jordan River and Palestine and thereabouts. Who'da guessed? Beyond the place I shot this shot, a quarter mile or so toward what's called 'Little Half Dome', we carried out the body of a guy who'd committed suicide, the details of which I won't go into here.
#1 is from a hundred feet to the right of the 'off... (show quote)

Well that's unfortunate, and I know, from experience, a difficult business. But ultimately is the reason that you were being paid the big bucks!
Maybe he was a frustrated photographer who didn't know that there was at least one photographer in the world who could do justice to this scene.
