Finally have the time next year for a long awaited Africa safari. I would really appreciate some insight as to a quality tour company, suggestions on where to go for wildlife from your experience and any general observations that would help in my planning process. My biggest concern right now is monitoring where the world is with Covid as the time gets closer.

When I took my Galapagos trip in 2007, Gary Strand was one of my trip mates. Of similar age, we bonded over our relatively new Nikon D200s. He runs Wildlife Explorer out of Arusha Tanzania, and I would love to do a tour with him. http://wildlife-explorer.com/gary-j-strand

Another vote for Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT). We have done two African safaris with OAT and both were wonderful. Very reasonable sized groups (under 15) and great local trip leaders and guides. No pressure on anything but work hard to give you what you want.

Note: these are not dedicated photo safaris so if that's what you want look to another company. However, there have been many photographers with us on our trips and we've had plenty of time for our shots. However, no one brought tripods as most were from the vehicles so bring a towel or something to steady your camera on while in the vehicle. Don't plan on changing lenses in the field as it is dusty. Also, watch the weight limits because these trips are nimble and often use small planes to get you from place to place so a 30 or 40 pound weight limit is pretty strictly enforced.

A good zoom is a good choice with perhaps a very fast lens for night drives. On any day we often had animals a few feet from the vehicle and also over a hundred yards.

OAT also has a very generous change program so if something happens to your trip they'll let you change to another time or different trip with no penalty. (Do check that but that's what we have on our scheduled trip to Patagonia in November).

Hope you have a great trip!

If you are going to Tanzania, Thomson Safaris is a very good company to use.

I’ve used Wilderness Safaris through a closely tied broker, Journeys Unforgettable. Once you’ve claimed you bags in Africa airport you are tended to and guided. Some border crossing (small prop planes) are tricky. Journeys arranged the photo Safaris first to Zimbabwe, Botswana and S Africa, second to Botswana and Namibia. World class photo guidance by Dana Allen. Groups of 12 or fewer. Game drives off road deep in the Savannah, 2 or 3 person per open air Land Rover. Top notch camps and cuisine. Not a dull moment during waking hours (and a few late night). Okavango delta one of, if not the, best viewing for the big five and others.

I suggest Abercrombie & Kent. They are terrific. I used them for a camping trip in Kenya. Tanzania and Kenya are well worth the experience. You also can go to tented camps (tents with phones etc) or Inns. I got great shots and had a lot of fun. I have travelled all over Africa for work and you do not want to have a hassle down there. If you go, the ballon ride over the Serengeti is a must so that you can photograph the Wildebeest migration from above. As to Covid in Africa, try the State department website for current information. I also suggest that you consider personal safety issues as well in planning your trip.

I used them as well. They are great. I did the full camping version of the trip as opposed to tented camps of Inns. It was a lot of fun. The guide was knowledgeable. I suggest a balloon ride over the Serengeti. Check the State Department and CIA websites for Covid and safety information.

Hi... I live in Wisconsin and I coordinate and co-guide Photo Safari's to South Africa, for the last 15 years.
If you wish to contact me, I would be very happy to give you complete details about how to prepare for a Photo Safari and what you should know at this time. Thank you, Jeff Engel jeff@jeffengeloutdoors.com

I would strongly recommend that you check out "Pangolin Photo Safaris" Both their Website and 'YouTube' channel. They have stacks of Video's explaining different venues etc. etc.
I have been looking at them with a view to perhaps going to Botswana next year, health and Covid permitting.
On the Chobe River, Okovango Delta they have flat bottomed boats, with swivel seats down the centre, each with a gimbal attached. So you can pivot left and right. Their Safari trucks carry a maximum of eight photographers (all with 'window' seats).

I went to Kenya & Tanzania about 15 years ago. Great trip, during the Wildebeest migration. Due to the current strife in nearby Somalia, I would consider southern Africa, such as Botswana. Also, carry two cameras with 2 separate lens of your choice, so you don't have to change lenses, risking fine dust on your sensors. I went with a group of about 15 people that was arranged by a friend, so I don't know any travel company to recommend. If there is a rain season, go toward the end of that season

We used a company called Lion World Travel, based in Toronto. They worked with two local travel companies, Liberty and Leopard, in Kenya and Tanzania. We went to 7 parks in 12 days, moving from lodge to lodge. Masai Mara, Serengeti, and Ngorogoro Crater had the most wildlife, but we saw animals everywhere we went. It was a great trip. Highly recommended.

Joe VanOs Photo Safari. First trip with them in 2006 and multiple since then. Excellent - tour guides, accommodations, and access to prime shooting locations.
