Here's an interesting article about the thinking behind the design of the original astronaut knife.

Space Force Special Ops? Whatever they're mission might consist of!!!

As a kid I bought a very similar hunting knife for about $3.50, although I didn't hunt. It was just a bad looking knife.

Marines use them for tooth picks. Maybe the space force will too?

Back in 1968, I joined the Navy. I attended boot camp in Great Lakes, then became a corpsman and ended up attached with a Marine Unit. I purchased a "KA-BAR" to carry on maneuvers or into combat should I be sent. I still have that same knife and the original sheath for it. It has held a decent edge for years. Of course I have had limited need for its abilities lately.

Most of the Space Force won’t actually be in space but ground based performing various space related missions…and those ground bases will need security forces…

KA-BAR U.S. SPACE FORCE KNIFE / $100
Ka-Bar's fighting/utility knife has served all branches of the US military well for years. And now it's adding a knife for the newest branch: Space Force. This made in the USA knife features a 7" 1095 Cro-Van steel clip point blade with a gray powder-coated finish. The Kraton G handle is a baby blue color and the knife can be carried in a grey MOLLE-compatible hard plastic sheath. Each USSF knife arrives razor-sharp out of the box and promises to serve faithfully throughout the solar system.

Blade Length: 7" / Thickness: 0.16" / Width: 1.8" / Overall Length: 11.75"

The original KA-BAR knife would take a 45 degree bend before it would stay bent or break, they were quite a knife. I have had many variations in my knife collection over the years. One of my first knives of choice if I could have only one. A lot of fake crap ones out there.

One thing to keep in mind about knives. They work wet or dry, underwater, hot or cold, in the sand or mud, day or night, on earth or in space. The same can not be said for a firearm. Think about it.

(Why, OH WHY, did I buy a Boy Scout knife in 1966? Because it had that emblem on it!)

It's an excuse to over-charge the military for another "official" product. They probably charge a $70 premium over the same knife that's "unofficial." Our tax dollars at work...

Ya know, a $400 "flat head impact fastening tool with fastener remover" is just a $20 claw hammer, right?

There is no end to marketing schemes that rip off the government.

I want to see the data that proves it is functional throughout the solar system. Is that a guarantee for eternity??

It's not actually issued to them but rather a design for a civilian model available for sale on the website.

According to the Kbar website it's not any more than any of the other Kbar fighting style knives and in fact it's not even being issued to the space force which is why it only has the Kbar name stamped in the blade.
The military version would have the branch stamped in it.

Perhaps they need them when collecting alien DNA for the covid vaccines. Those aliens sometimes put up quite a struggle. 😜
