I was in Torrey, Utah in early August during their weird “monsoon” season. Another storm was forming as I finished dinner.
NIK “wet rocks” with modifications.
Notice how the black and white delineates the rain bands in the approaching storm.
There is no right or wrong to my questions: which do you like better, and why?

I often prefer b/w but for this image I think color works best because 1) the color in the image is just too good to ignore, and 2) the composition is a little too busy for b/w IMO, the simpler the better for b/w. It's a close call because both are excellent.

I worked with b&w film for many years and I spent as many inside a darkroom. I like b&w although not all images render themselves to be better in monochrome.
This b&w image can be improved and I agree with Bob, those bright areas need to be toned down. Contrast is also a significant contributor to b&w images and this one is low in contrast except for the bright areas.

I prefer the color because color helps delineate a 'busy' picture. Black and whites usually stand out better with more minimalist subjects.

I prefer the B&W and I see more detail in that rendering than in the color version. The range of tone & light in this shot is so varied that I would have a real fit trying to meter this one without errors in judgement and it is a close-call any way you slice it....if I understand this to be a single image taken and not one combined in post process or a bracketed set and then manipulated.......Nice image any way you choose. Thanks for the challenge.

I prefer the color by a slight margin because I just prefer color, but the B/W is excellent because of the well defined
contrast throughout the scene.

I like both for different reasons. The one in color shows the old wagon wheel as it looks today and in the color we are accustomed to. The black and white tells us this is a photo of olden days-the wheel doesn't look as old because the photo is old.

Well, I'm very sorry to hear that. I would have thought that everyone would come over to my side after hearing my very erudite commentary. Not true??

That's a hard choice, but I like the black and white a bit more. Has a dramatic effect.
