When is small too small?

I recently ordered and received a thumb drive with 256gb of storage. This thing is so small I'll loose it if I don't do something to help keep it visible. It has a little slot in the upturned portion that I could put a string through but it is too small to put on a keyring. Sometimes as we try to go small, we may overdo it! As you can see, it isn't even as large as a quarter! Yes, I know there is the mini SD card which is even smaller, but those are not something that is moved around like a thumb drive. They usually end up in a phone, i-pad, drone, etc. and stay there. This little bug is used to transfer files between two computers. If I ever lay it down on the desk I will most likely have to break out a flashlight to locate it!

I have an item similar to the one in the centre. It stays plugged into the side of my Laptop, and transfers actions from my cordless mouse.

Besides being so small which is great if you need to keep one hidden.
The higher capacity ones do run hot!
Other then that they're great.

I keep my thumb drives and external hard drives in a small box beside my laptop or use a small desk drawer if you have one.

LOL hubby has a couple of those and I have had to fish them out of the vacuum cleaner bag more than once.

And the laptop can be put in a bag without buggering the mouse transmitter. No need to remove it from the computer.
At least it's larger than a micro-SD card.

I have one of them, like it, use it to store files that need to be available when travelling, just move drive from main computer to the travel and go , drive is in one or the other so it never gets lost, small enough to ride in the small laptop, and no bother with one drive, can never get one drive to sync, instructions never match what I see on my screen!

For 15 or 20 years, I have kept a "Verbatim Tuff-'N'-Tiny" on my key chain with all of the files that I want to have with me no matter which computer I am using (I keep it synced with https://lploeger.home.xs4all.nl/TreeComp.htm ).
Sadly, they no longer make the original, but they make similar ones (that aren't quite as tough or tiny).

I noticed it was warm when moving it from one computer to another. Not really hot but noticeably warm.

At work (12 yrs ago), a cooperator had drives that were nothing but thin black strips, maybe 1" x 3/8" x 1/16" thick, no where for label, string, etc. I imagined a drawl full of unlabelled data chips someday. Only saw them once, they did work by the way. Figured that is what in the pen drive that matters, rest is housing? Think of memory cards, micros vs regular (most is housing to match size of interface on computer or card reader).

I have several of those tiny SanDisk "drives." I have two of them plugged into my car, with thousands of songs on each. I can insert them and then close the little USB door.

If you don't like them then don't use them. It's not that complicated. Maybe you just look for something to complain
about. The point of them is for them to make a profit on an item. If they don't, they will stop selling them. If they do that means enough people like them to continue the product.

I used to buy pruning shears for the farm. I would try to avoid the ones with green handles. If you lay one down in the weeds it will disappear. They would occasionally get a touch of red and yellow spray paint, which helped a lot. Those were my standard farm tool handle colors. The red was generally what you would see, but the yellow helped except in the fall when things started to get brown (and by that time of year the yellow was pretty dirty).
I was in a hardware store and a customer was debating between two pruning shears. I told them to get the one that wasn't green because it was easy to lose. The clerk berated me, saying "we depend on that for resales".
Of course if your desk is like mine, small stuff is easy to lose under piles of paper, no matter what the color. Maybe glue on a bright ribbon.
