Yeah, I kept going back and forth between lighter and darker... could not decide. In the end I liked the mood of the darker... well maybe not.. hmmm

Me too. One other compositional point: Generally, composition is stronger when subject is walking into the frame--not out of the frame. I understand the inclusion of the fence on the left (behind the woman).... Did you crop?

Nice shot, would like to see the full umbrella and see what a little fill in flash on the woman face and legs would add to the photo.

ah..yes maybe your right...but I went for the mood... if she was walking toward us she would have a face, and then she could no longer be just anyone. ourselves included. Thank you for the idea though.

I went back and forth with the crop , the origanal has the entire umbrella but I kind of liked the composition better with it cropped in tight like this. I am at work right now..shhhh. I will post the original uncropped when I get home and see what you guys think. I could be wrong on this one. I do tend to crop very close ... I have a quirky sense of composition  thank you for the input !

hmm I never saw her face... maybe you are right. I liked the mood of not seeing her face, and to tell you the truth I can count on my hands the amount of time I have used a flash... I guess I am just not a flashy person... yuk yuk sorry
anyway. I did not know this woman and she was having a quiet moment and I did not want to intrude. I love the mystery of umbrellas though and how they hide peoples faces. I try to photograph them a lot. I think I should lighten it up a bit though, seems to be the general opinion.

Trueblue,

The uncropped photo is a great starting point. I would take a little off of the top, but leave the whole umbrella and just a bit of sky above it. On the bottom I would take off the bottom strip of grass and leave as much road as possible. The fence and left border are good but I would crop the right side at the point that just crops off the far left hand white rock.

With your permission I'll crop it and repost it so you can see what I'm saying.

Eric

Sure go ahead... crop away. I cropped the first one a bit close for most folks liking , but like I said I have quirky cropping taste
