I opened a free account at “Lenstag.com” a few years ago and registered all of my lenses and cameras, even flashes. I can then print out the list and file it away, but also they are registered at Lenstag. There are other advantages also, like new and used value of each item, if the items are stolen and someone else tries to register them they will be red flagged and you will be notified. Now as I register a new item the list updates and I can print out a revised list. Highly recommend this site, they also have a premium site that offers more features for low cost.

Thanks for the info! Will have to look into it.

Yes, it is good to keep track of what you have. Having a list of my stuff has kept me from buying duplicates. I use plastic storage bins for remote controls, filters, tripod parts, etc. It makes it very easy to find what I want. Of course finding a place to store all those storage bins can be a challenge.

I also use the bins / boxes. They stack nicely and keep things free of dust, and if a pipe were to fail, dry as well.

Up until burglars stole everything, I had every camera I had ever owned - almost! Some of them still worked. They showed my progression. Now I only have what I've purchased since the burglary. But I do find myself purchasing older cameras that I'll likely never use "just because." Everyone collects something.

Burglary is one of the worst, had one many years ago and lost a few collectables. I've done a couple of film and digital bags, and even a couple of film only photo excursions. Film gear is so tempting because many wonderful things that were extremely expensive are now a pittance. What doesn't harm anyone, doesn't break the budget and is enjoyable, at a certain age makes a great deal of sense to me.

I have four Nikon cameras and twelve Nikkor lenses. I never sell any because I use most of them regularly. My insurance company keeps the inventory backed by receipts that I have furnished to them.

I also have Nikon cameras and lenses dating to the '60's. Last week, passing a yard sale, my wife said, "Turn around!". Reluctantly did. Found a new camera bag for $20. Wife said, "Buy it!" Reluctant again, but the sale was raising money for a historical society, and the old man said, "Not just a bag, there are 2 cameras in it." "I don't need more cameras!" I told my wife. She said, "Buy it; it is for a good cause." I thought, "Yuh, probably Kodak Instamatics." Checked inside. Kodak alright; but unused-condition 612 digital, 24-400 (equivalent) zoom. Second camera? Also unused condition Canon EOS Rebel G with 28-80 EF zoom. First Canon/lens ever for me, couldn't pass it up, (besides, it was for a good cause!)

I used to do the same, at one point when I was still doing some photography work for pay, had a camera rider. Since reimbursement for the older gear would be minimal, and the newer should be covered under Homeowners, i haven't bothered. You bring up a good point. I need to talk to my insurers on another issue, and will explore this one. Thanks!

I document my household inventory every four months, be it photographic equipment, electronic appliances, guns, and everything else we have of value. God forbid, a theft, fire, or natural distaster, I want to make sure that we're covered.

Actually, I photograph the entire house at least once a year. Every room, every closet, cabinet, and drawer open. I take singles of any valuable item. Things with serial numbers go on hard copy lists as well. Paranoia, a lifestyle!

Me too. Anyone who has had to prove contents of a house for insurance purposes after a fire will understand.

We moved last year and had to downsize to a small apartment. I donated the things I thought I would never use again as well as all the non-digital gear to a local high school that had an excellent Photography program. The year before the school was gutted by a fire and lost all their photo gear so they were more than happy to get the equipment. I could have tried selling it but as others have pointed out, you don't get much for it. Knowing that some students will get use out of it is the greatest payment.

Our genes must intersect some place. I am
a "professional saver". The trait is a great
"diary".

On a another subject: I have several "hand"
quilted quilts from the 1930s. They were
quilted by my Mother and one or two of
her friends. One of special significance to
me as it was quilted for me by my Grandmother.

I mention this because you mentioned that
your Wife has gone to a quilting event.
Does she or any other UHHer know of sources
where one can find some estimate of their
value and perhaps places to sell them?

Lee

PS:Though I don't often comment, I really enjoy
your superb photographs.

As mentioned, she is away for the week end. When she returns I will ask if she can answer your questions. Modern quilts are so labor intensive, I can't recall of one being sold locally at any price. Historic ones, particularly with interesting provenance might be another story. I'll get back to you Monday via PM.
Thanks for the compliment!

Coverage under the regular Homeowner policy is much different than scheduling it with a rider.
