That first picture of the steam kettle brought back old memories - Not necessarily fond memories - of my time in the Marine Corps. For us younger enlisted men, mess duty was something to be dreaded. You were supposed to get no more than a month at a time, but those months were very long. Up a 4:00 to get ready for breakfast. As soon as breakfast is over it's time to prep for lunch, then it's time for dinner. Then clean up to finish the day. If you were lucky, you finished at 7:00 - 8:00 in the evening. Never left much time for carousing in the evening. Then once or twice a week you had some unit that needed an early breakfast or late supper - then your day got a couple hours longer.
I must have done OK, on one of my mess duty terms some of the cooks wanted me to change my MOS and become a cook. Hope I didn't disappoint them too much when I told them no freak'n way! (only advantage the cooks had was they worked shifts instead of all day.)

"This Dress White Captain's uniform was worn by USS Midway's final commanding officer, Captain Larry L. "Pappy" Ernst, who commanded from June to August, 1993."
The Midway was the first carrier built post WWII. I spent four days aboard her in 1971, while she was on Vietnam War duty. (I was part of an F-4 USAF/Navy aircrew exchange, but didn't get any flight time as we were being chased around the South Chine Sea by a typhoon. The Midway was well known for being a real rock-and-roller.) Got some pix somewhere and will share when I find them.

These photos were originally taken a couple years ago, in color, and I thought they would translate well to black and white. Comments welcome.
Outstanding B&W photography. Perfect for the subject matter.
Very impressive set of images. You were 100% correct, the B&W conversion works very well.

Sure would love to see some more of your B/W pictures, my father was a retired (Oct. 1980)Navy Capt. F8 Crusader pilot, and I'm sure he probably spent time on some of your ships. Did 3 tours on the Kitty Hawk and I believe trapped on the Midway. Thanks for posting.

I'm afraid I also cannot quite make out the description. Hand held, 1/60th at F4, so only so sharp.
