Maybe I’m barking up the wrong tree, but you said your old computer was 10 years old, and now you have a new one. Could your old LR have been either a16 or 32 bit program? If so, and your new computer is a 64 bit computer, it may not support your old LR program. Just a thought.

Since you apparently have your photo image files on the new computer from the file transfer/copy process, I would recommend just taking advantage of this "blip" to begin a new life in modern post processing. There are several (many?) photo post processing software packages out there that are worth learning - some are easier to get into and more transparent than others - but the basic functions and sliders, etc. are similar.

I would just sit back, take a deep breath and dive into getting a list of software out there, select one or two of them for a free trial, search YouTube or the software's User Support site for videos - maybe even buy a book on the program that looks good to you. You will be surprised at the range and depth of abilities you will unearth and this just might introduce you to a fun new hobby ! You don't have to master the full scope to dig in and quickly get good results.

This from a former Lightroom/Photoshop user converted to On1 Photo Raw -- but there are several others out there that are similar - some easier to learn than others.

Being a dedicated LR/PS user, I would normally advise updating to the current subscription. But it sounds as if you use LR only occasionally to touch up some photos so you're just using it as an editor. Editing is pretty good in LR but it's not the best editor out there. That would be PS but that isn't really for just a bit of touch up.

I'll have to say you should look into a different editor. Start with the free ones. Check out the website of your camera's manufacturer. They probably have a free editor available. If not, there are a lot of people on UHH that use free editors so find some opinions here (not hard to do) and see if you can find a program that fits you. Or if you're willing to put some money into it, check out free trials. If you do a free trial, do only one at a time. Otherwise it's easy to get confused as to which free trial does what.

Yep. I've been on UHH since October 29, 2011, but I rarely visit anymore and even more rarely do I post. Just too many ugly people, and not just here, either. They are everywhere on the Internet, hiding behind a computer screen and keyboard.

Is it Win 10, my new computer or me?
When my 11 year old computer failed, I thought I deserved a new one so I purchased a Dell core i7 with Win 10. I assumed I could look forward to 11 more years of trouble free service. The old computer went to my son who I ask to transfer everything to the new computer. ( the slide rule was just invented when I went to school so what do I know) All the photos were there and so was LR which I had installed in 2013. Only trouble is, LR does not work. I don't remember how I installed it originally- I can't find any disc. I don't want to subscribe to anything since I only use it once or twice a month to touch up photos of my great grand kids. Any suggestions on what I might do next to solve this issue? Is there a suitable substitute for LR to at least let me edit my photos?

I have LR mobile on both my iPhone and iPAD - I do have a subscription since I wanted to be able to save my RAW files in the cloud and I wanted my phone and tablet to sync - but you can use most of the LR features without any subscription. I just upload my RAW files right into LR (most often on my iPAD) and then do my edits there - works great.

Canon Guru

Currently use 5DmkIII w/500mm f4L + 1.4x
am happy with results, but the camera "seems" to get heavier every day, am 73
monopod is helpful but not great... I usually shoot handheld for as long as I can 15-35 sec

My question, to be answered with as "little" prejudice as possible, as I do read your responses often, which I find very accurate, funny and of course "somewhat" biased towards Canon ...

How does or will the R5 + RF 100 500 + 1.4 TC at 500 length compare to MY prime 500mm f4L ?
here is an image taken today as a sample ... ONE big issue for me is I believe that ZOOM teles can not compete with Prime lenses... I do know the R5 would have a lot more crop, but will it be AS SHARP as my present combo? And if not, what combo would, the weight my present lens is definitely an issue and I can't afford the 600 f4 III lens.... let me know your thoughts [ related to these questions...thanks! ]

The image is not submitted for it's perfection, just a sampling of how it performs for me.
...regards, Richard

Re-read this looking for anything to do with "LR gone" but found nothing.
Were you content with usurping someones elses thread about Lightroom or did you just instinctively reply here because Canon guru had also replied here ?
It is a bit hopeful asking for advice in someones else's thread because often I think that after replying some people don't bother checking back so you may not get a response. You might have been better to start a new thread.

It's you. You have broken just about every rule a home computer owner can break. I hope others who read this go out and fix all the things they may see in your story so it doesn't happen to them ! Why do I know this ? Because I made a lot of money out of silly people who couldn't bust their way out of a wet paper bag. They have a disk with Office on it and a licence code. And they paid (say) $200 for it. What do they do ? Promptly lose the disk and not take note of the licence code. Quite happy to kiss good by to $200 but would take somebodies hand off if they picked up a dollar note you dropped and didn't return it.
Two glaring errors you have made here are as follows -
First off just because your last computer lasted 11 years DOES NOT mean your next one will. That is misplaced optimism based on only a single occurrence - yours. Totally ignoring history.
Secondly you keep every disc, write down every licence code, take noted of wherever you got software from, download and keep your original software in case you need it again especially keeping a copy of every licence code you were sent via email, keep track of every upgrade and possible licence changes during this period.
Then you won't have a tenth of the trouble you are now in.
I'll let others suggest possible replacement software.

Like the guy who bought a new car after 20 years and can't find a way to play his 8 track tapes. Just joking. But this op seems to target Adobe and Adobe is not at fault one bit.

well first off, I am kinda troubled...that a simple question is being reviewed and censored.

I really didn't care about the LR gone, my attraction to this post was that THIS person was selling a lens I was considering buying, and FURTHER, he was keeping an L lens which I also own. This is why I posed this question to this individual.

Now I have searched for the Canon Guru and asked him a similar question, which I thought this was going to be.

MY question is WHY you are interfering with a simple question posed to a member, which might I add is totally appropriate given the information I have already shared with you?

Are you part of the SOCIAL JUSTICE POLICE here? Did I threaten or ask a question contrary to rules of courtesy???

I look forward to a Civil response...thanks, Richard

I might be at a loss to know quite what you consider to be a civil response. But here goes...
1. I am not even sure I am who you are replying to since you did not mention me in your entry.
2. Now this might be impolite - I am a little upset with the degree that participants totally ignore common sense on here. If you aren't interested in LR gone then why did you ask another completely unrelated question in the OP's thread ? If nothing else you usurped, or diluted, the OP's question and him getting maybe some sort of useful answer. You also diluted your own chance of possibly getting an answer.
3. As to me being a member of the Social Justice Police here (assuming it was me you were referring to since this is not clear) or did you threaten or ask a question contrary to rules of courtesy ? No I am not and you didn't. However you did break tradition and rules of common sense. Your question was ok re courtesy but asked in totally the wrong place and the wrong way which I pointed out. I was interested in LR gone, not choosing Canon lens, but I had to read your question to find that it was NOT about the subject that I thought it was. So I got an email reminder of a new answer and spent time getting to it only to find it was not in the right place. I wonder how many others did the same ? 20 secs multiplied by 1000 ? 330 odd minutes of wasted productivity lost to the world, a waste of the OPS time and a waste of yours. Somebody has to point out these things otherwise they will continue.

Oy...

I am NOT certain who received my inquiry.
I was simply asking a question about WHY the post person decided to sell the newer RF lens and keep the L lens.

Then I received a msg which to ME seemed odd. Why someone is offended or find it DIFFICULT to understand a simple question despite the TITLE of the post is beyond me.

As it appears YOU are the post person and feel I am out of bounds asking a question. I will refrain from further discussion.

Communicating online has challenges which for ME at times are beyond comprehension. When I am told WHAT does this have to do with LR GONE, my answer is NOTHING. I did NOT realize this broke some kind of policy rule.

My apologies ... good luck

I'm far from being a LR expert but having gone through the failed HD issue more than once there are 3 things you need.
First of course is your catalog of photos. Second, as others have pointed out you need the install file not the files as installed on your old computer as well as the activation codes Third, what no one has mentioned you need the file(s) xxx.lrcat. You may have created in the past more than one catalog file but the lrcat file contains all the information on all of the edits that you have made on the photos assigned to that catalog. Without it, as far as the edits you made on photos, they are gone. Once you do the new install and start up LR it will look for a catalog file or ask you to create a new one. If it has created a new one find that file, rename it xxx.lrecat.old and rename your old lrcat file to the exact name the program assigned to the new lrcat when you started the the newly installed version of LR. The library file in LR will now show the file or folder names of the photos you edited in the past and the info was stored in your old LRCAT that you've now got the new LR install to recognize. The files will all have a "?" beside them because LR does know where you stored them and it will ask you to find the file. Often if you click on the original hard drive letter that had al the file and redirect LR to that dive it will then find all of the other files on its own.
If you can't find the install files come'on. Bite the bullet and sign up for the $9.99 per month subscription for LR and Photo shop. LR has come a longgggggggggggggggggggggggggg way since the version you have. Does some things you've never even thought about.

Ahh I see the problem. You don't know what the word category means and why it is important that it is used correctly. Categories are used to divide questions up in such a way that people can find answers relevant to what they asked. So if you want to know something that is not under a specific category you START A NEW ONE ! Or in this case a NEW entry under a category to separate it from the other entries. Life would become a lot harder if everybody justs goes ahead and sprays questions everywhere with no regard for any sort of order.
Like they do in supermarkets. You imagine if they started storing flour in the canned fruit section. It would be almost impossible to find anything especially if each supermarket did it differently. So you have categories and systems in place so stuff can be found. Same applies to UHH.
Just my point of view.
