Well other than the Obvious Backpack or Camera bag ? Which you Mentioned! The Main option would Probably be A Hard case ? Something on the Order of a Pelican case , Nanuk, Seahorse , SKB or the More Budget Friendly Apache Brand ( Available from Amazon or Harbor Freight) with your Preference of Interiors ? Padded Dividers - Pick & Pluck Foam , Kaizen Foam , Custom made / cut foam ( mycaseBuilder.com) ect... or Trekpak ( pelican custom dividers ) keep in mind the Trekpak dividers System are mainly made for Pelican cases with a Few exceptions like the Apache 3800, 4800, and 5800 case ! Though you can find several videos on how ro basically make your own Trekpak type setup for Practically Any Brand of Hard case ? If you are reasonably handy with hand tools and willing to Tackle the Job? From what you describe of your photography Sojourns ? I THINK A hard case would be your best option overall. For Durability, Protection against dust , moisture and Drops & Damage and Dings with the Added Benefit of a Lockable case ( security ) also you can buy a piece of Aircraft Cable ? ( not sure ifvthats the Correct name ? ) = vinyl coated Braided steel security cable and Make a tether to Secure the case / contents to your car either inside the Car or Trunk ? And that will atleast prevent the Smash and Grab thieves from getting away with it ? Yes they can steal the whole car ? or If they Have Bolt cutters or a Torch ? But Given enough time its not invulnerable or invincible ( its a Plastic case renember?) The point is to not give the opportunistic thief. Enough. Time to do their criminal Enterprise!!! Hope atleast some of this information proved useful if even only in a small way !!!? Good Day God Bless and Good Shooting My friend !!!!!!

I use a large pillow behind the passenger seat in my SUV. I can reach right back while sitting in the driver seat ad grap the camera. It sinks into the pillow so sudden stops and movements cushion the camera(7Dll-100-400ll). 2 years and no problems. Can access the camera quickly and shoot from the car as not to miss anything.

BEST ANSWER so far. Easy, handy, secure, cheap.

On the floor behind the driver's seat wrapped in a jacket or towel for padding.

Depends on your driving & if your not off-roading a rough road. I put mine on the front passenger side floor on a diagonal when puttzing around inside of my local NP.. It is pretty safe there on a diagonal if you don't need to slam on the brakes.

I have a small camera bag for this exact purpose, (just fits the camera and lens, no accessories), to safely tuck away behind the seat, or for quick access, over the headrest with a short strap.. Been doing this for years in all kinds of driving conditions, and never had any kind of mishap.

On more days than not, I jump in the car with my camera and 150-600mm lens and take a similar tour around my town. I stop at a salt panne, drive a mile to a path I walk through a marsh, then over to a seaside cliff and walk a beach. Back in the car, to a local park fed by a brackish creek, then over to a yacht club for a nesting eagle.
That's 10 short trips in and out of the car.

Where can I safely and quickly put my camera with the lens attached that will keep it reasonably save while a travel from stop to stop?

I use styrofoam form from packing box, that keeps it from rolling, but doesn't really provide enough support over the length of the lens. I thought about a box of dried beans, but that would be full of dust. Perhaps a box of washed pebbles would provide a base.

Yes, it it's not a quick stop, I keep a oversized backpack/camera back in the trunk, but's unlikely to get in there for a 2 minute dirve.

Anyone have have a gadget that will hold the camera and lens in the car?

Slam on the breaks when cell-phone chatting soccer-person in a mini van pulls out right in front of you, and you will launch that camera wrapped in towel right into the dashboard.

I would avoid the trunk. There is a story of Yo Yo Ma leaving his cello (about a million bucks) in the trunk of a taxi. If it could happen to him, .....). A few hours in the trunk of a hot car could be curtains for photo equipment.

How about a dog seat strapped to the front passenger seat? Deep enough to lay camera in the bottom unattached to quickly retrieve. Securely strapped to the seat back. Safe enough for a dog if attached if you wish.
