Definitely not a night heron. But nice photo.

Still trying to develop my nascent BIF techniques Where I go, they only have these guys (blacked capped night herons) or GBHs along with some little swallows swooping and soaring. If anybody knows where I can find a bigger variety of subjects in the south suburbs of Chicago, please let me know

A really nice capture, Joe. It looks like a Tern, though, not a heron.

Yes, Joe, that is a fine image.

I checked Merlin Bird ID, and they gave me four choices. I guess one good tern deserves another?

Looks to me like you have a pretty good handle on capturing BIF. Well done.

That is a type of Tern, not a Black Crowned Night Heron.
Otherwise, a nice shot.

I think it looks like a Caspian tern, but great shot! Especially in flight! Those night herons do fly, but are bulkier.

I love your photo but of course have to say it is not a heron. That is the best I can do. For me it is just a plain ordinary seagull of some type. As you might remember I have screwed up my own bird names lately so maybe should just stick to, Fred and Ethel.

On to your photo. Very well done, great composition, pretty sharp and good colors. I like it a lot.

I would have to check out my U.S. maps but it seems that Goleta, CA might be South of your area if you want to drive out. We are a pretty good source of birds you are looking for and I would be happy to show you the area. I would also impose on friends who REALLY know the area AND what they are talking about to help out too.
