Wireless remote shutter release

Hi everyone!

Currently using the Nikon WMU wireless remote shutter release on my Galaxy S10 for my Nikon D5300. It's ok given it's a Nikon freebie.

What I'm looking for, if one even exists, is a wireless remote compatible with the D5300 that will allow me to change exposure if and when needed. With the WMU all I can do is trip the shutter. I've seen the Vello brand, but that does the same as the WMU, trip the shutter.

Short of there not being a remote with the ability to change aperture and/or shutter speed, (WB will be on Auto), what setting would you use - Auto, program, aperture priority or shutter priority?

Thanks to all who respond.

jayw if you want to assure constant exposure without adjusting Exposure Compensation while shooting then you might look into Auto ISO

MENU > CAMERA icon > ISO sensitivity settings > Auto ISO sensitivity control > ON.

You would likely benefit from this Guide (which addresses Exposure with the Nikon D5300)

SORRY MISSED the WIRELESS part

I've used the Vello brand and its other incarnations on Canon 60 and 70Ds and thought you can set the time the shutter is held open? I know I done it for Aurora photos in bulb mode. I am certain that if you push the slide button forward it holds open the shutter as long as the button is held. I did this for various times to see the effect on the Aurora photo. For eclipses, I use bracketing and let the camera decide.

You are looking for a remote wireless controller... not a remote wireless release.

If you don't need very much distance from the camera and the camera has built-in WiFi, you can look into an app for use on a smart phone or tablet. (I know this exists for Canon... but can only assume that something similar is available for Nikon).

If the camera doesn't have built-in WiFi, it may be possible to add it with some sort of module. For example, a WiFi adapter is available for a couple of my cameras that fits into one of their two memory card slots.

WiFi is limited to no more than about 15 or 30 feet (varies depending upon several factors).

Alternatively, there are more powerful external wireless networking modules such as the Camranger line. I'm pretty sure Nikon makes their own, but they are much, much more expensive than the Camrangers. Last time I looked there were two models from Camranger... a smaller and less expensive one that has a permanently installed rechargeable battery and a larger, more expensive model that uses separate rechargeable batteries.

Wireless networking devices like the Camranger (and Nikon's own) give much greater range... at least 100 feet and possibly as much as 400 feet. They also provide faster performance that may make it practical to wireless transmit image files from the camera to your device.

You do need to confirm compatibility of any devices with your particular camera. You can do so at the manufacturers' web sites.

If you are looking for a app other than Nikon I would try Cascable. It’s free to try but will not let you download raw files unless you pay. You can change almost all settings on your Nikon camera. I use it with the D850 and like like it but I think it’s iPhone iPad only app.

Sorry for being late to reply, but I want to thanks to all who replied.

What I decided to do is use the Nikon WMU app and set my camera on Auto or Aperture Priority or Shutter Priority and let the camera make the exposure. Not ideal, but for the number of times I'll be using the remote, it will have to do. The CamRanger is way too expensive and I just can't justify the expense.

Again, thanks to all for your suggestions.

How do you set up the Nikon WMU to trip your camera?

Not knowing if you're using Android or iPhone, the Android version can be found at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nikon.wu.wmau&hl=en_US&gl=US

If this link doesn't work, google Nikon Wireless Remote Utility.
