After checking, I think I'm wrong and you are right. They do look like a royal tern, but the black on the head is not lifted up on any of them. But all else says so.

Thanks for the start. I looked up similar species. They might be common terns.

I looked up Royal Tern, which linked to similar species. They might be common terns.

I beleive the common tern has yellow legs, whereas the royal tern has black. These look black to me, but they are in shade and there's no downloadable image.

Possibly Caspian Terns. Hard to say.

Not sure, but I think the gulls have hooked beaks and the tern's are pointed.

Royal or Caspian Terns. Not enough detail in the photo to be sure.

They look like royal terns to me as well - BUT - PLEASE - anyone who requests help with ID of birds or plants, PLEASE put "store original" so that we can see an enlarged photo and PLEASE TELL US WHERE AND WHEN THE PHOTO WAS TAKEN! If this was in Kansas, these are probably not royal terns.

Hi thanks for the information. I should have thought to add that I shot these near my home in NW Indiana, about 30 miles SE of Chicago. I will attach a downloadable second image showing the same birds. I was just trying to save a few bits by not including the original of the first photo.

Regards,
merk

Sorry, I forgot to put when in my last reply. The photo as taken the past week.
