How do you ID a moth? This one is gorgeous--outside and in. The inside color (gold/brown) caught me when it was flying; it landed before I could get a pic... and it did not open its wings once landed. I'm sorry I did not take more time to take better pics. One of these pics is focused on antennae, the other on the wing color and patterns.

Looks more like a butterfly than a moth. No luck ID'ng it, thought. Cool pics.

Definitely a butterfly, most likely a red admiral.
Nice shot as these are speedy little buggers that rarely sit still.

Pretty sure it is one of this group Nymphalidae. The amount of blue throws me, also the prominence of the "eyes" on the wings. Red Admiral, possibly, but a lot of blue. Very interesting, thanks!

Definitely a red admiral! It has its wings up far enough to mostly hide the red on the dorsal side that it is known for!

Red Admiral pic on Wikipedia.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanessa_atalanta.

Google lens plugin on Chrome browser on Android also identifies it ad a Red Admiral. I don't see the red mark in the wing - but am no butterfly expert.

The blue threw me off too. I'm stumped.

Definitely a butterfly. Look at the knobby antenna.

For moth reference:
Beadle and Seabrook. Peterson Field Guide to Moths of Northeastern North America.

An easy way for me to tell the difference between a butterfly and a moth is that a butterfly rests with its wings up ward and a moth rests with its wings flat on its back.

I've never seen of these that I'm aware.
