Is there a way to number a list of files? I know that I can number the whole batch with names like File (1), File (2), File (3), etc. But is there a way to keep the original files names and have consecutive numbers in front of them?
I use Rename X on my Mac. It can do what you describe and much more.

Google "Renumber files in Win 10 Explorer Folder"
Thanks. That was the first article I found. As he says -
"All the files/folders will now have the same name but with sequential numbers."
I'd like to keep the original names.

I wonder if my Mac would read these music files on a USB. I'll give it a try.
I use Total Commander (free) which can do what you want and more.

I use Sherrod Computer's "File Renamer."

I have that, and it almost does what I want. I'd like to add a number to the beginning of the filename.
"Adding a unique number to the end of a filename"Lots of programs let me add a number to the end of a filename, usually giving every file the same basic name, Picture 1, Picture 2, etc.

Very easy to do what you want with Bulk Rename Utility from www(dot)bulkrenameutility(dot)co(dot)uk or just google Bulk Rename Utility. It's a very powerful file renamer - and it's free for home use.

Not very intuitive. It will be faster for me to change each filename individually.

There's a little learning curve -- but it's an amazing tool...kinda' like photo editors.
A lot of this type of stuff can be done in two ways:
1. Old DOS commands run from the command line.
2. Use Excel to create a bat file containing everything you want done,
i.e.
copy filex to filey
copy filez to filew
... .... .. ....
save file as something.bat
Execl makes renumbering easy as you can create the first one in a column and then expand down column and only number will increase.
List of files to start can be done in Command line
list filex.m > kkkk.sav where > is redirect command. Looks up DOS commands they worked up to 10 and I am sure they are still there.
Using the dos commands to capture the info, i.e. name of all files in a directory into a text file. Then using Excell to create bat file can be real handy.

I already re-named/re-numbered all the files. That's for the suggestions.
It will do what you need in two steps. Under advanced insert two keywords with a period between. <unique_in,000,1,1>.<fullfilename>
Preview and you’ll see the new name with periods replaced by spaces. Apply.
Next go to find/replace and put a space in find and a period in replace. Preview. If it looks right apply.
The 000 in the unique keywor is a mask saying you want three digit numbers - 001 002 etc. if you want 1 digit make it 0. 5 digits 00000.
Not as hard as it looks I use it all the time.
