I back up all my travel photos through the OneDrive cloud which puts them on my sync'd home computer. Every morning at 6:00 am, the home computer is automatically backed up to an external drive. No mess no fuss. No loss. Attached is a link to show how to link your IPhone Camera Roll to OneDrive: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/automatically-save-photos-and-videos-with-onedrive-on-ios-74d406bb-71d0-47c0-8ab8-98679fa1b72e The best way to get OneDrive 1TB, is to purchase Microsoft 365 (not to be confused with Windows 365 which is an entirely different animal). If you want further info regarding OneDrive, message me. I've been using it for over 10 years.

That is good option if two things occur. One, you have access to a good Wi-Fi connection or internet sirred connection on a regular basis and, two, you're not uploading a whole lot of data because the process will be slow.

Again - let me be clear- it is a good solution in some situations.

As for my wife and I, when we travel, sometimes we can take anywhere from 500 up to several thousand images in a given day. In addition to that, most of our travel is by way of cruise ships, and the Wi-Fi service with data transfer is outrageous in price....

In addition to the above, you will need some kind of device, a driving device which will be the horsepower which transfers your photographs via the Internet. For most individuals that could be a tablet, it could be a laptop or it could be a phone. In any case, there's always the possibility that the driving device, might die on you and become inoperative when you travel. That very case happen to me in 2018 when I spent three weeks in Paris France and my laptop died on day number two.

Don't get me wrong, I also have cloud storage mechanisms, on several fronts including Google Drive & Sync.com... But for some people, like me, an independent, Standalone device, that does not require to be connected to a computer, can also be a very good option

That is the reason why for me, the NexTo DI. Is a very good option.

I have the RAV hub and a WD My passport Wireless Pro. Both have SD card readers, Rav Power is cheaper, but you need a portable hard drive to download onto. The WD is integrated with HD, but more expensive.

The Rav downloads whatever is on the card you put in it. The WD does not make extra copies of photos that are already downloaded on it, regardless of the card you put in it.

The concept of more cards on a vacation is not an answer to making a backup of your shots while on a trip. Unless you have dual slots for memory, use them both and write to each card during shooting, you don't have a backup.

Personally, I wanted to spend a few dollars to ensure I had backups of my shooting on vacations, so both these backups work. I also use them when I have a paid shoot, because you can never have too many backup copies then.

I agree about the need for internet and often with internet I need a hotspot.

I left out a couple of steps because they don't fit the original question. I always travel with a Dell XPS 13 which is a very compact computer. At the end of the day I download the photos from the camera chip onto the Dell. I leave the photos on the camera chip so they are in two places. If I were on a cruise ship, I would probably wait until the next port for the Internet rather than pay the ship's Internet fees.

OneDrive has a very fast transfer rate, much faster than Google Drive. And it lets you know when the images are transferred so you can shut down the hotspot or stop paying for Internet service.

Also, I have Photoshop Elements on the XPS 13 so if there are periods of inactivity, I can start processing the images.

So as soon as my images get to OneDrive, they are quickly downloaded to my home desktop and the following morning, are backed up to an external drive. I never remove the images from the camera chip until I'm home and have verified that the images are backed up to the external drive.

There a couple of tricky things about OneDrive so if you have interest in using it, Private Message me. I've been using it for about 10 years

I also use the Ravpower WD09 filehub. I bring two SSD drives. Each night, after shooting, I backup the day’s images to both SSDs. If the camera cards are SDs, they plug into a slot on the filehub, attach the SSD, and push a button. I’ve never had an issue with any SD. As for your problem, I wouldn’t rule out a compatibility issue with the card reader and your SD card. Are you traveling right now? If so, put the card safely away somewhere and purchase some cards to get you through your trip, regardless of whether you get this one to work. And to be safe, I’d recommended a few 32g Sandisk Extremes, nothing bigger. I owned the original Pixel and now a Pixal 4a. Never had this issue. Someone mentioned Chrome. Ignore that, it’s the same Android OS found on other phones but without added junk. More than likely, the latest OS unless you have an old phone. I’m assuming you have 64 or 129gb. Good luck.

Save the card for when you return home. Use a NEW card, formated on the phone, and continue to collect photos. When you get home, upload card one, then card 2. Format card one on your phone. Now you have a backup, should this happen again.

I have been using a WD My Passport Wireless Pro for some time and have no problems. Love it. I have 2TB which is more than sufficient

The SD cards could not have been all that quality, unless you seriously abused them.

I also travel a lot, like you, and although I do take my laptop for quick edits and uploads to Facebook and other location... Just like you, I want that Extra insurance... On one 3 week trip to Paris, France, my laptop "died" during the second day out... and I was "out of luck for that backup" so had to sparingly, make sure I had copies onto my 8 128 Meg SD cards and worked very hard at keeping them clean... Vowed to never let that happened again..

Sooo, I bought a portable storage device when I got home...

May I offer the following for your kind consideration,

NEXTO DI NPS-10 Nexto Photo Storage device ~~ which is offered at B&H, but can be found at other locations...

Key Features
Portable Photo / Video Backup Unit
Review Photo & Video Content
2.4" 320x 240 Color LCD Display
1 x CompactFlash Type 1 Card Slot
2 x UHS-II SD Card Slots
1 x microSD Card Slot
1 x USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C Port
1 x USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-A Port
Data Transfers up to 320 MB/s
Windows, Mac, and Linux Compatible

The KEY Feature of this device, unlike others, is that you can view your content on a builtin LCD screen

A URL for the product is listed below:

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1481554-REG/nexto_di_nps_10_cfast_portable_all_in_1.html

As for me, I will continue to carry my laptop, but I fully believe in Backup, Backup, Backup... and am serious about making copies all the time.......... I also, if and/when I get next to a good internet connection, will also send my images to my cloud account...

I fully know that there are many different solutions out there, and range in size and price as well and device functionalities .......... BUT, the above device allows you "view" your backups and insure, they are "OK" at that point in time...

Hope the above can help you and I wish you safe travels..... and Keep on Clicking

Cheers

This looks to be a good solution when weight counts...but what do you do about other card formats? My camera uses XQD cards. And so that I understand, can you then transfer from this device to an external HD for additional backup?

This is the ravpower and disk
No computer involved until I get home and attach disk to computer.
I successfully connected the drive to my phone to verify that files were transferred to the hub.

Is there a way to download XQD cards using this?
