Everyone here seems to think that larger pixels = lower noise at a given ISO. That’s what I’ve seen espoused here for 4 years by many many people. Hence my interest in The D3!!

Given OP's interest in the higher ISO range, wouldn't the D3's 12mp sensor provide excellent performance in that scenario. The Nikon Df is often rated higher in low light performance at 16mp. The explanation offered to me was that fewer pixels on the same size sensor yield larger pixels and hence better low light, less noise performance. A recent link showed the Df was close to the D850 in low light performance. I have both so no axe to grind here.

That is true but this D3 I’m considering is not broken but rather pristine with 18,500 clicks

I have a poster from Nikon which is 20x30 of a race motorcycle taken with the D3 at ISO6400. Looks fine.

That’s what I figured

We're all caught up in specifications of a camera, if it's only 12 pixels, how good can it be?... In the real world 12 pixels is all most people would need, even in a 9 year old camera, especially one that has great low light performance and is as fast as the D3. If you don't mind the size and weight it's a great buy and best of all...their built like tanks!

I have my D3s mounted with a older 60mm 2.8 D macro lens and use it for my ebay sales. I have it on low so my Jpeg files load quickly on the ebay site. Don't know what I would do if I had to replace it.

I have a D3, and use it more than my 5D 11. I can only state that I use it for birds, animals and landscapes; it performs exactly as it was stated to do. It is particularly good for low light scenes, and believe me 12MP is plenty good enough !

I know the D3S is much better but in average it’s $300 more. Just sayin

If you are looking at low-light performance, you might consider the D3s which reports say has a 1 to 1.5 stop advantage over the D3.
