Minor glitch with old Nikon D70

I shoot these days with a D7100 and am very happy with it. I have an old D70 with a nice 18-55 Nikkor lens. I decided I don't need it as a backup anymore and am getting ready to either sell it or donate it to a charitable program that might put it to good use. My problem is that whenever I shoot on automatic the flash pops up and fires off no matter how bright the lighting is. Any idea what the problem might be? Also, how would you value the body plus lens, plus strap, plus lens hood plus 4G memory card and all the chargers and cables? Don't want to rip anybody off but I would be happy to rip off the IRS if I donate it and take a write-off (don't quote me on that). Thanks in advance.

I think you can set the flash for always on.

At 6MP, I don't see how a 2004 era cropped-sensor DSLR could have any economic value in 2021. Ebay shows 'asks' for around $100. I didn't review actual selling prices.

Hey don't deny me that 0.1! It is 6.1 megapixels. I was hoping for around $120. Not looking to make a killing here.

Shoot in "P" mode (Program) and the shooter can control the flash

Well I paid $30 for a good working one 5 year ago. I don't see $120 today unless the inflation is really that bad.

Wow! I guess I was being unrealistic with $120.

In automatic mode, the pop-up flash will fire if the lighting is dim. It shouldn't necessarily fire in bright light though. It won't do that in shutter priority, aperture priority, manual mode, or program mode. The thinking is that in those modes, the user wants more control.

With the 18-70 F3.5-F4.5, this camera makes a very sweet IR conversion camera. The lens does not have the IR "hotspot" that some lenses can have when used with an IR converted camera. So, it does have some value.

Given the frequency of problems specifically in the D70, and their $50ish market value, I'd be rather hesitant to pay $275+ in 2021 dollars for an IR conversion of this model. But, maybe that's just me ...

Take it off auto mode and the flash won't always pop up! Shoot in program if you want the camera to make all the decisions.

I believe, from what I have read, you can also turn the flash off in auto mode.

No idea about value of the camera but I may have the answer to your question about the flash popping up. When you shoot in Auto (green setting on mode selector) you may be one click off from the auto without flash setting. Look at the mode dial and see if there is a setting with a flash symbol (zig-zag thingy) with a line through it next to auto. I seem to remember the same thing happening to me when I had a D70. If the flash pops up in any other mode than auto, perhaps the flash selector button, near the lens release button, could be stuck.

Never set to green "Auto"! My friend had a D80, and his flash kept popping up also on green "Auto", ruined a lot of his photos. Set to "P" auto, and all will be well. I bought a similar outfit you are offering for $50 last year; maybe you could get $60 if you hype it a lot.
