You certainly want to see the Corning Glass Museum in Corning, NY and the Steuben Glass workshop. The Cornell University campus itself is beautiful and picture-worthy, as are the gorges to either side of campus. Lake Geneva’s not bad either. For odd things to look at (from the highway) N of Geneva there’s an old army base which happened to be a nuclear weapons storage site. If memory serves, some of the bunkers are still visible.

Corning glass museum located in Corning, NY is about 20 miles from Watkins Glen. I visited it as a teen when it was a factory and still have fond memories of the tour.

Montezuma Nation Wildlife Refuge in Seneca Falls. Be aware there’s no Aztec pyramids in “Montezuma” in upstate NY. Beats me why *that* name .....

"The marsh near the north end of Cayuga Lake became known as the Montezuma Marsh. It got its name in 1806 when a Dr. Peter Clark named his home after the palace of the Aztec Emperor Montezuma. Soon the entire marsh and nearby village became known by the name Montezuma."

Hello Hoggers,

Visiting the Finger Lakes region for the first time (staying in Watkins Glen) for 6 nights in September. I know there are a lot of wineries and breweries that I will research myself. Any must see areas for photos?
Thank you, Tony

I have been to the Finger Lakes Area several times. I stay in Hammondsport which is on Keuka Lake less than 20 miles from Watkins Glen. There are several beautiful state parks in the area. Letchworth, Buttermilk Falls, Stoney Brook are just a few. There is a county park in Naples that you walk in a glen to 2 large waterfalls. It is a beautiful place to explore.

Hi Tony,

I stayed on the east side of Lake Cayuga in 2018, and checked out Filmore Glen, Buttermilk Falls, Lansing Myers Park, Watkins Glen, Robert Treman, Ithaca Falls, and Taughannock Falls. Taughannock has a short, flat hike to a 200 foot waterfall. At most of these you can do a loop hike consisting of the “gorge” (or creek) hike followed by the “cliff” (woods) hike back. I generally went up the gorge trails and came back down the cliff trails.

At Hermann J. Wiemer winery on the west side of Seneca Lake, I found a Riesling semi-dry wine that I really liked.

Have a great trip!

Pat

Well, it is a gorgeous area, with many sights already noted. Its just that I seem to recall hearing very recently - yesterday or the day before - about big floods in that neck of the woods. Just check it out before heading out.

Alexandria Bay is at the north end of interstate 81 north of Syracuse. It’s a good four hour trip one way.

There are several microbreweries in Corning. Market St. Brewing is right downtown.

U may want to take a short trip to Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge. The Fall waterfowl migration should be underway.

I lived in Rochester NY for 45 years and I have photos of over 50 waterfalls. Most on my website at http://donbaird.net/. I highly recommend you also go to Robert Treman State Park and Letchworth State Park.

Would second Letchworth State Park and the glen itself. There is also Mt. Morris Dam, very close to Letchworth which you might find interesting. Montour Falls, just down the road from you, has a nice set of falls easily accessible. You don't mention what you like to shoot but there is a small rodeo (Reese Ranch Rodeo) that will be running the 4th and the 18th just down the road. Easy access and they are quite photographer friendly.

Thank you !!!!

Been wondering about it for 50 years.

The name being about 3,500 miles out of place, it’s kinda satisfying to know that it has a somewhat quirky explanation.

Take highway 14 from Watkins Glen to Geneva.
Awesome.
Many other things.
You have to go to Corning as well.
See Rockwell Museum and Corning glass works.

It’s becoming clear that no matter how much time you plan for the finger lakes region it can never be enough.

My ex wife sold the house that we last lived together in Lebanon valley and moved back to the finger lakes, where her large family is from. The Mormons return every year from Utah for an “origins” event. Peeps just can’t stay away. It’s a magnet :-)
