Thank you for hosting another Free Weekend Lesley!
We had a tragedy at Assateague this month. A 3 year old mare named Moonshadow was involved in a hit and run accident on the island one evening. The accident was witnessed but the driver took off with no time to get any information. As you can imagine, the island is DARK (it's a DARK NIGHT location, for astrophotography). Moonshadow and her 3mo old foal were both struck but survived and were being watched by NPS Rangers. Moonshadow had an obvious hematoma on her belly and the foal was left lame on her left hoof. They both seemed fine for several days, grazing and nursing and the filly's leg was improving. Unfortunately Moonshadow was found deceased with her poor filly crying out for her.........heartbreaking.
NPS decided to move her filly to Chincoteague where the horses receive vet care (MD side of Assateague does not, they are considered wild and left alone).
This is Moonshadow and her filly, which folks have unofficially named Moonbeam.
