Finally, all DSLRs capture at their 'base ISO', typically ISO-100, but is does vary slightly higher or lower on some brands / models. Only after the image is captured is the requested ISO applied to the base ISO image, brightening the image to the corresponding ISO specified for the exposure. This brightening process is the primary source of the 'digital noise' for most all digital cameras.

Thanks, Paul. This would explain my challenges trying to autofocus on the crescent moon with my old T2i a couple nights ago. It looked too dim at f/5.6 ISO 100 in the LCD display, and increasing the ISO to 6400 didn’t help except for when I switched to the recommended manual focus option.

As for the brightening process, would it be better to shoot at the base ISO in Raw and brighten in post production?

Quick update: on AV af 1/100, f5.6, iso 3200 won't focus on back drop because nothing to focus on.
on manual focus same settings will take photo
on Auto focus on tripod laying on bench will focus because I guess there is something to focus on
THANKS A LOT HAVE A GREAT DAY, CHARLIE

Focus is done by a contrast comparison, nothing there (blank backdrop), can't focus.

In my opinion: No, rather, just shoot at the ISO needed to create the near 'best' exposure in the camera in RAW. Let me caveat this. Cameras that are known / documented to be ISO invariant are said to be OK to shoot at the base ISO and just adjust in post. But, it depends on how much ISO adjustment is needed. One or two stops adjustment in post on the invariant cameras typically show no issues in noise added via the processing, but it begins to be noticeable in the fine details in 3+ stops adjustment vs what the camera could have produced.

If the camera is not ISO invariant, such as nearly all Canon EOS models, the camera's amplification of the ISO is better than can be done in post processing.

And finally, even ISO invariant models have limits / ranges where the 'invariance' applies. Camera A may be ISO invariant up to ISO-1600 (4-stops over ISO-100), but say shooting at ISO-1600 and just adding 1-stop to ISO-3200 is worse in post processing than just shooting at ISO-3200 in the camera. One must closely research on the internet their specific model and then verify that research in their own images and post processing.

You seem to be reading my mind to minimize noise. I use the lowest ISO possible but now I’ll take some provisional shots at higher “normal” ISO just in case.

I've got a slight problem. l own a Canon 5d mkii and I'm having problems with the focusing and using AV in a lower light condition. I get a no focus confirmation light when I try to take a photo. It just flashes. I was thinking of taking it to a camera sales place in Austin, but it's kind of old and I don't think it is worth the money I would have to put out to fix it, even if they could. I called Precision Camera and they said they didn't have some parts for it. I found a 5d mk 4 on Craigslist for $800(which I know is ridiculous, plus I don't trust Craigslist) but I can't afford the price of a new camera. I found an 80d kind of in my price range but I'm not sure about the swing out display. I guess what I need is a little help on what to purchase. I'm kind of on a limited budget (but my son says if I don't spend my money, he will, but I tell him I don't not really want to live with him if I spent my savings). Please help!
THANKS, CHARLIE

Due you live near Precision Camera? Before you go out and buy another Camera have them diagnose your 5D Mark II providing you with a free estimate. Still a Great Camera! I’ve had 4 repairs with Precision.

Talking about Craigslist, the seller said he would package the camera and get insurance, and overnight it to my location. I live in New Braunfels, which is about an hour drive to Austin, and said could I just come up to Austin and check it out and get it. I have no response from seller on either camera. One was $800 dollars and the other was $1000 made from the same seller. That made me kind of suspicious.

Go nowhere near this deal..run away

It could be so many things but in my case, with my old Olympus E420, similar focus problems seem to be caused by poor body to lens contact. The symptoms, like yours, can be a focus beep but no correct focus. Or nothing and no beep at all. Or the worst is that hunting mode and the system never getting there and no beep. Taking the lens off, putting it back on once or twice usually will fix this. Cleaning the contacts does not seem to help much. Also high humidity can cause problems. That camera is old and has its senior moments and this is one of most common now. Time to move up to full frame with much better S/N and then get into some nifty post processing and using RAW more often. Love the HOG.

Perhaps a silly question but have you cleaned the lens contacts, especially on the camera?

Yes for both. Several times. Old age and humidity are the main culprits here. But like that old Timex add - It takes a linking but keeps on clicking!!!!

80D swing out display works wonderfully well. If you have to raise your camera to take pictures over al wall or people's heads, it's great. If it's tough getting low enough to take the picture like ground level it also works fine. It's a real advantage.

I have a MkII camera with a 24-105 f4 lens for sale for $750. The shutter count is 56600. I just bought a R6 and could use the money.

I noticed you are from NewBraufels. I was in SanAntonio in 2017 for the PPA National Convention and while I was there I met Michael Plumeyer from your town. We have been Facebook buddies for a number of years.

I'm from Berlin PA and if you want to reach out to me, you can email me at photorb@comcast.net.

Auto ISO with a limit set on it? Try turning your ISO up & see if it will focus.

I have a 5D Mkll and in low light I have to make sure the focus point is on something of good contrast like an edge .
