I just received a 15 day trial for smugmug. The photos are great and the menu is nice. Looking for some advice on someone who has used them to sell photos. The $200 rate for that premium is a lot if I don't sell a bunch of photos and I am not sure how many people would go to the site for my animal-zoo-bird photos.
The basic and other plans don't seem like an advantage to me. I just started a part time photography business and I did purchase some prints from them for a really good price just to see what they are like.
Please advise if anyone has any recommendations.
Thanks
I tried smugmug once. Sold one picture to someone I knew on a photo sharing site. They do well with shipping and such. Make sure you have some sort of marketing plan, though. I didn't, so only sold the one.
I found some of the computer work I had to do tedious, and I had trouble with their tutorials. Having never tried another such site, I don't know if this is normal, harder, or easier than other sites. It was fun to see my page once I got done, though.
Commercial Photographers work by signed contract, have a Day Rate and negotiate deliverables plus scope of usage...
That said Dale, since you're in to shooting sports you might hang out in the Sport Photography Forum...
There are a number of "MaxPrep" shooters there... Many will likely share their path with you...
btw, I only work by contract...
Oh it takes a lot more than "passion" to turn a trick in commercial photography... Experience is a brutal teacher...
Wishing you all the best with Smugmug Dale...
Awesome- thank you. I will check out the Sport Photography Forum.
Dale
I love Smugmug! I have used it since 2014 and have never had any problem with it. It works well for me as a high school sports and portrait photographer. My sales pay for my time and gear.
$200 sounds steep to me.I’m pretty sure I don’t pay that. I use the service primarily for family and friends. Sold pictures through shows and doctors’ offices.only.

Jamey- thanks for the info. Are you in the Lake Norman or Charlotte area? I am doing a lot of sports photography and looking for some tips if you are close enough to get together for coffee sometime. I am retired and basically just doing this part time and hoping to get into a high school to do their sports. I have been doing a lot of neighbors and friends club teams. Are you a Nikon guy or Canon?

SmugMug has been very good for me , however, I think the cost is a bit high with the annual fee plus the commission. They handle sales very well with several choices for printing. Always quick to answer questions but it's by e-mail only , no phone number which I hate.
I've been with Smugmug for a decade and *usually* do OK with my pageantry (read: marching band and color guard) offerings. Last year was an exception, tho. I'm so involved in that activity teaching and judging, dunno if my production will be enough to justify the expense ongoing...but I'll keep the site for the time being. <shrug> I generally like their customer service, but some of the operations are, er, less than intuitive? Haha, like all aspects of this industry, from the equipment we use to software, there *is* a learning curve. ;0)
Hi Dale!
I am a Canon guy. We can meet up for coffee sometime in Charlotte. We can arrange this in a private message.
