Hi All!
I am looking for advice on the best portable External Hard Drive for a Mac (the M1, Big Sur combo). I have used WD Passports, Ultra Passports and Lacie's and have had issues with corruption on all over the years. I am debating on getting another HDD or going SSD in the hopes that no moving parts would be beneficial. Thoughts please? I would like to get at least a 2 TB since my files from my Sony A7RIV are so large. I understand that with SSD it will be more expensive .

SSD may be your best bet. I have used 2TB Passports for years with no problems but I may just be lucky. I keep two copies of everything I really like.

That's what I am thinking too...even though you get less storage for a higher price.

Samsung T5. $119 for 1 TB, $219 for 2TB. Spinning disk is not in the same league for speed, ruggedness or size.

Thank you. I have never even considered a Samsung...but worth looking into.

To me a SSD would be a better choice. Trix pointed out the Samsung products and those are reasonable prices. One thing you will want know is the data transfer rate of the particular model SSD. I believe they vary depending on the make and model. Usb 3.1 will handle a max of 10 gbps. I think the Samsung T5 will do 540 mbps. At any rate I believe you will be impressed with the speed compared to a spinning hard drive

I guess the T5 is discontinued. :( Sounds like there are a couple versions of T7 to consider.

Thank you for the info. I am going to look into the T7 since it appears that the T5 has been discontinued.

Yes, I just wonder if it makes sense to purchase something that is already discontinued since I am assuming that the T7 has made improvements. Not sure I really need the touch pad, but it is not that much more to have it. I have read some reviews that the T5 was better than the T7.

The T5 isn’t discontinued - still current on the Samsung site and a good fit if you don’t need the speed of the T7, or you are concerned about $/GB, or you are port limited to a 5Gb/sec. transfer speed (USB 3.0j.

The T7 is 2x the speed and pricier ($159 for 1TB at Amazon and on sale for $153 at B&H). The OP didn’t specify which M1 Mac, but the MacBook for example supports 10Gb USB 3.1 gen2, which at 1250 MB/sec is a good fit for the 1050 MB/sec speed of the T7. Either are an excellent choice.

Yes, the M1 MacBook Pro...do you think the T7 touch is worth it versus the T7?

Depends on what you feel the odds of losing it in a public place are and if it will have sensitive material on it. My concern would be the reliability of the touch mechanism - my iPhone routinely doesn’t recognize me. Your other option might be to encrypt the data if you’re concerned about security and the file system supports it.

Major tip: Do NOT buy from a non authorized factory dealer. I recently bought one thru Amazon Market Place that had the drive itself (inside) swapped with a smaller drive. Finally got my money back, after months and lots of trials and errors...

I would go SSD if money is no problem. A 2tb SSD is quite expensive. Check out WD Black series, they get excellent reviews and so far I've had no problems with them.
