I do a lot of international travel photography. I have a USAA Valuable Personal Property Policy that covers cameras, jewelry, guns, etc. Is pays off if you're not a "professional" photographer. I'm a travel advisor so they don't give me any problems. They paid off a few years ago on a new Sony RX100 that my wife had placed next to her on a bench in St. Petersburg, Russia, and we made the claim from the ship and we were paid in full before we got home. I also always buy the camera "drops & spills" insurance (about 5% of the cost of the camera for 2-3 years of coverage) since the covers any kind of mishap including dropping a camera in the water or on the sidewalk. Between these two policies, I can be absolutely fearless in the kinds of photos I take.

Very helpful discussion. Prompted me to contact my insurance agent. Theft from house or car is covered under standard Homeowner's Policy.
Coverage of loss of articles into water, dropping onto ground, etc., is not covered by Homeowner's Policy.
But such losses would be covered by Personal Articles policy.
Personal articles property insurance through State Farm is $240/year for $15,000 worth of coverage. Includes various forms of loss. Policy must list individual items, original cost, etc. Not sure how it deals with devaluation vs. replacement costs.

Will replace whatever the going price is. I used them twice and they were good as good. A sigma 70-200 f.2.8 broke in half while shooting football from the sidelines and was blind sided $1250.00. Second time I slipped on a wet bathroom floor at a football and another lens went down the tubes. The lens was a Tamron and not made anymore, gave me a check for more than I paid for the lens.
Yes you need the lens serial numbers and the bill of sales too. I insured everything from bags to filters, batteries what ever. My cost is $306 for $18,500.00. Works for me... Good luck no matter how you go.

Good tip about insuring UV and Polarizing filters, tripods, gimbals, etc. They add up to a surprisingly large sum.

Everything, start adding all the small items and you end up with a nice size bill $$$$$$$$.

I am looking for a recommendation for a quality insurance company that I can get for my camera equipment. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks so much.

If you are a hobbyist, your homeowner's or renter's insurance should cover it. If you are a professional, I have a very good plan through Alstate Insurance. I have an agent out of the Salt Lake City area. His name is Howard Burklholz. He sold me a plane that covers professional photographers. All my equipment is covered. My premiums are $21.50 per month with a $500 deductible. Fortunately I haven't had to file any claims as of yet.

If I understand the guidelines listed by my Insurance agent, the Homeowner's insurance will cover theft from home or car. But it will not cover damage due to dropping lens or camera, immersion in water, theft from a hotel room, etc. That requires a "Personal Articles" policy. But perhaps the coverage differs with different insurance companies.

I would strongly discourage you from insuring your camera gear with your homeowners policy. Keep them separate, separate companies, even. You do know that any insurance company will drop you if you have too many claims, yes?
Why risk cancellation of your home's insurance if you get into a tangle over camera claims? Home owners insurance can be costly and hard to get in some locales. It happens. The more we combine coverage for multiple things, the greater the problem if it gets cancelled.

Good advice. I had a similar problem with our homeowners coverage. Now I have my camera gear insured by State Farm and so far, service has been good and cost is similar to that of having a rider. (On the other hand, my stuff isn't top-of-the-tree so if you have the lux goodies, you'll pay more!) Homeowners policy is elsewhere.

You might try Eastern Insurance. They have a number of policies for special purposes. Highly recommended.

Look into State Farm “Personal Items” insurance coverage. I keep this separate from all others and have had 3 claims in 4 years without any questions or payment delays. Works great!!

If you ARE NOT using your gear professionally and you have either home owner or renters insurance, you probably already have some coverage for photo gear. Depending upon the value of your gear, you may want to get a rider to cover the cost of replacement more fully.

If you ARE using your gear professionally (even just a little... i.e., if you EVER get paid for any of your photography work)... homeowner/renter insurances don't provide any coverage. However, I would recommend first contacting any insurance company you already do business with. Even if they don't offer coverage themselves, they probably can refer you to someone.... Either way, you might get somewhat of a discount because of your current relationship.

For example, I use USAA for all my insurances, but needed to get indemnified for certain events I was working. USAA didn't have any such coverage, but was able to refer me to someone who was able to help me.

I use State Farm. Used it for years. Only collected on it once with no problem. Image them all my repair bills, took it to the office and they cut me a check on the spot.
