I worked for the USDA, they had similar policuez on web searches. Problem was there is a rear variety ofcresearch done there. Hard for members of lab on animal reproduction to use web if worlds like sperm are hit words. Another time, scientist wanted generic picture of a cow, got lots of nude cowboys on cows. I search for a chemical reaction used in manure testing and got lists of sites of really filthy sex talk? Someone said sites load dictionaries as key words?

In the end, I believe FB and others may be able to do better, mor input = better AI, but it may require a delay in posting with an army of censors to do what people want.

Well...the 60's were certainly but not restricted to fighting 'Big Brother' and the 'Establishment'.

Guess what...Big Brother won.

Facebook recently suspended me from using it ( or even being able to view it) for no discernible reason and every time that I tried to open FB I received a message telling me that I had violated their terms of service because I was not old enough ! I’m 72 years old and I’ve been using FB for over ten years! Ultimately, in order to be able to use FB again I had to upload a copy of my drivers license to FB- I could not access anything on FB for three days.

I'll have to agree, that there is a reason why certain words send off alarm bells. There have been enough murder and mayhem where disturbed people have announced their intentions only to not be noticed in time.

I've been pretty quiet on FB, but I too could have used the word--'killer shot' or 'my client killed the job' or similar, and probably been banned. It's also true that a 'review' of the case should be done in a timely manner, but it's not your or my company either. Also would you really like the job of doing a blow-by-blow investigation of all these cases--and what would that cost us and them?

but it is a good thing that there are keywords that trigger possible perversion and/or acts of violence. I don’t see your indignation. Big deal, you are in Facebook “jail”—whatever that means.[/quote]

FaceBook recently sentenced me to Jail for violating their terms and bullying. And just what was my "crime"? Friends had posted a photo of them that I had taken 19 years ago. I commented that it might be time to update that photo and they agreed. Now here is what got me into trouble with FaceBook: My response was "Would love to shoot you anytime." Photographers use the term "Shoot" all the time. But apparently FaceBook's algorithm only picks up on works that they deem are offensive and abusive. I tried to object - since this was taken totally out of context - however only got a notice that there was a shortage of reviewers and that they could not review my objection in a timely manner. So the "offense" stays on my account. One would think that FaceBook would have a algorithm that can review the entire context of the online exchange rather than just focuses on keywords - which have multiple meanings. Also, with all the money that FaceBook and Mark Zuckerberg have, that many just maybe they could afford to hire more reviewers. Also, there is no way to physically speak to a person at FaceBook. Just be warned that your common everyday language as a photographer could get you sentenced to FaceBook Jail for a day or more.

Yesterday I posted an image of the Redmond Watershed Preserve. This was automatically flagged as a sale item which is illegal and sent for "review". Their programmers need to learn the meanings of words in the English Language.

I am not going to defend Facebook and its algorithms but I do use it ONLY as a portal to my 40 or so special interest groups that I really enjoy. Just ignore the general feed and move on; just like here, if you don't like the topic don't click on it.

True, they are private companies and have the right to censor whom ever they want and express any political leanings they want but they are no longer a bulletin board and should not enjoy the legal insulation granted them under the guise of being a true bulletin board.

IMHO FaceBook and Twitter are a huge waste of time.
I’d rather read posts on the Hog!

For these reasons and a few others I would never do Facebook. No matter what you think of Trump, I’m glad he said today he’s suing Facebook and Twitter for censorship.

That lawsuit is a joke, it has no legs and is only for the publicity it can garner and IMHO the social media sites do need to be held accountable for their content. If they were, we would have more civil discourse. I have news for you…. this site also has censorship, so I guess you will be saying your goodbyes 👋

Held accountable by whom? Who is the ultimate arbiter?
