Just remember---- Hitler rode to power on inflation !

He rode to power on a lot more than inflation. One of the most evil systems the world has known. Many never recovered from the evil!!

The one thing people who plan on an early retirement need to consider is inflation. It's never too early to start saving for retirement.

JRiepe… why should anyone start saving for retirement in this day and age. Their philosophy is such that the government will take care of me … why do I need to worry. Look at all the stimulus money child credits the government’s giving me. I don’t need to save

I saved for retirement.
I retired.
I collect social security, but I don't think I could live on it. I'm living on what I saved. It has saved my bacon.

The government doesn't give me any child credits because I have no children, and even if I did, they would almost be ready to retire themselves so they would not have been dependents for a loooooooooooooong time.

Same here but to me these kids today want everything without working. When they do work its minimal effort and minimum output with some exceptions. They want everything handed to them.

In about 1977, I got a job as a part-time auditor at the local Ramada Inn, working weekends 11:00 PM - 7:00 AM. The cost for a double room was $28. While I was working there, Peter Noone (Herman's Hermits), Muddy Waters, and an official for the UN stayed there.

A friend is coming to visit in a couple of weeks, and he wanted me to look for a good price for a room. We offered him our guest room, but he prefers to stay on his own. On a weeknight, a room at the Marriott costs $165. For the weekend, that goes to $350. That's $350 to sleep for one night. Amazing! Yes, I know that if people didn't pay that much, they wouldn't charge that much. Still, when I think of all I could buy for $350, there's no comparison.

The Marriott is upscale, but the other places charge similar rates. You know how Motel 6 got its name, right?

When I was a kid traveling with my parents one summer, it was very hot, and everyone was worn out. My father pulled into the first motel he saw - price didn't matter. The cost for a night was $18! We were all surprised at how expensive it was, but we didn't care.

My daughter took my grandson to participate in a soccer tournament in southern CA and paid $267 for a one-night stay in the local Motel 6. When I explained the original meaning of the name of the establishment she almost cried--then she laughed. Inflation is one thing, but I know the quality of where she most likely stayed and it would make me cry as well.

I may be making this up, seems to me hotel rooms are more expensive Sunday through Thursday in Chicago. Or maybe they used to be. There are/were more business travelers than weekend tourists.

You're spot on.

You don’t know my grandkids. They are the antithesis of those characteristics. For the most part, kids behave as they were taught.

It seems that the capitalist way is if you cannot make $300 for a certain number of nights then double the price because you will surely make the same money from half that number of nights (in spite of the fact that the people who can afford the double price are only about a 1/10th the number).

Jerry,

You live in an area, the Catskills, where NYC folk go for a weekend to get away from it all. Supply & demand. Home prices in your area are going thru the roof with prices driven by those city folk who ran from the pandemic - the leading edge of a wave. Not to mention escalating, sky-high real estate taxes and utility bills. You can only hope that they get tired of the country and move back to Brooklyn!

We spent the past weekend in a college town at a Hampton Inn. I called six weeks ago and was quoted $200-300 per night at all major and non major chains. Nothing going on. One week before trip the price dropped to $87.00 per.
Second night to our surprise the bed was unmade, nothing done. As I reached for the phone the news was on and I heard ,"Most motels are no longer doing daily clean-up due to a lack of help and cost." I put the phone back in cradle
and the bed felt good. They do need to add extra towels if this is the case but I guess someone would steal them.
