5D newbee questions

Just noticed on my recent 5D purchase the command, 'turn off camera after sensor cleaning' and it does, but the mirror stays wherever it went (up position maybe) then clicks back to its former position when the camera is turned on again (20 minutes later). Is this method of turning off the camera recommended or should it be done rarely?

Also, I've probably done something wrong in the setup, but autofocus isn't working in any mode except auto. Yes, the lense is not set (on the side) on manual focus.

Love the sound of that mirror.

Need to buy a battery grip to get a better grip on this clunker, which comes in at about 5 pounds with the 28 - 135 lens. Know where I can buy a used one.

OK, now I'm ready for the wisecracks, and a few helpful hints.

Do you mean the original 2005 12.8MP EOS 5D?

The sensor cleaning mirror lock-up is a special and specific camera operation when you need access to the sensor to manually clean the sensor.

Have you downloaded from Canon the PDF manual for this camera model? It might help you address your issues.

Again, assuming you have the 2005 camera, this body doesn't have a 'sensor shake' that nearly all modern DSLRs include, many times performed automatically when the camera is turned off. Don't confuse the access to the sensor cleaning mode with the automated feature of newer cameras.

If AF works only in AUTO, it would seem you've modified the assigned functions to the shutter release button. Again on an EOS body this old, the process is related to C.Fn-04 (Custom Function #04). This function is covered on page 152 of the EOS 5D user manual, setting 0 should restore autofocus to the half-pressed shutter button.

Thanks and good tip on the manual. Hope the site has it.

Yes, this is the classic model. Mirror has already fallen off. I remounted it.

I think your camera is set to back button focus. If that is the case it will still auto focus when you press the shutter release button and the camera is set to auto. Any other setting you would have to press the assigned back button. You can purchase a used battery grip at many places, KEH, mpb and a whole host of others.

How do I get the usb cord to work? It's supposed to allow downloading the Canon drive to a computer or printer, but I get no icon on my Mac Air? I'd rather not buy a reader.

With the camera off and the computer on, you should connect the USB cable to the camera and then the computer. When you turn on the camera, the computer should recognize a newly connected device, giving options including 'see' the disk in the camera. From there you should be able the drag and drop the image files from the camera disk onto the computer disk.

If all that doesn't happen, you could have a bad cable or broken ports in either the camera or computer. One last chance is to download and install the MAC version of the "EOS Utility", if one is available for your MAC OS.

Hit the Master Reset and start over after reading the manual.

My 5D mark iv used to just pop up a window to download When I plugged the camera in, but after a software update I now have to be in my photos app in order for the 5D to show up as a download option.
Hope this helps

Still not seeing any message or icon on my computer, at any setting on the camera.
