Dunedin Florida uses a system where you go to a box, put in either dollars or a credit card. It spits out a paper slip that has the expiration time in large numbers. You put that slip on your dashboard so the meter maids can see it. No slip? You get a welcome note from the city that tells you where to pay your fine.
I've seen similar in Austin. One day I was parked in a small lot that used slips on the dashboard and I saw this guy drive up, quickly go from car to car checking slips, then take off. I never thought they'd actually check such a small lot.
