Any suggestions?

I have the Canon Pro 100 and I feel it does a beautiful job on B/W.

I have a 7900 that I have had since new, and agree it is a good photo printer for color but terrible for black and white. It has been out of production for at least 15 years and most inks that you can find are out of date if you can find them at all. Epson or Canon with pigment inks is the way to go.

Can you be more specific on your opinion on pigment ink. I'd like your perspective.

Very basic overview or dye-based vs pigment-based inks. Or look here.

Most will recommend the printer they use. I use an old HP LaserJet 1320n and am happy. Simple fact is that B&W printers are so advanced that brands are not all that different. I would stay away from ink jet printers.

If you are satisfied with printing photographs on a laser printer, that's fine. But ink jet printers have much better photo printing quality.

True, but I find ink jets to be temperamental. Maybe it is me.

I have an Epson R2880 which has been trouble free for many years. If a laser printer was my only choice, I'd send my prints out, as printing quality is important to me.

Check out the links Bob Hartung listed in his response. Very good simple explanations of dye base inks vs pigment inks and advantages/disadvantages of each.
