When these two fly in red shows on the wings, but isn't so visible when their wings are folded. What I've always thought of as red wing black birds showed red on the shoulders when their wings were folded, so is this another variety of red wing black birds? Or something entirely different?

According to Sibley Guide to Birds, it is a Red-Winged Blackbird.

Definitely red-winged blackbirds. Sometimes the red shows bright and clearly—like epaulettes — but very often you see a thin strip of red over a thin strip of yellow

Use the Cornell app as well as Audubon’s app. Both great.
Sibley’s is still the “when still in doubt” go-to.
There are also several “Birds of ……. (state) books. The one for Indiana is excellent.
