The main problem is LINT. Most folks do not store the Sony RX camera's in a small case but rather purses and pockets are used for storage and they are full of LINT.
You have three choices,
1. return the camera
2. Keep the camera and put up with this nonsense
3. Do what some do, get a pair of plyers and fix it your self

Right on. While these small cameras will fit in a shirt, jacket or pants pocket, or a purse nicely, those places are a huge source of lint and dust. I carry and store my M7 in a closed belt carrier, even when it’s inside the small camera case where I store all my RX100 accessories. This is probably the best insurance you can have for keeping the lens cover mechanism in proper working order.

When you turn the camera on or off, put it up to your ear and listen to it as it goes through its cycle. If it sounds smooth, then you should be in good shape. Continue to protect it. If you hear any grating noises, you’ll have trouble. Return it and exchange it for a new (to you) one. And a newer model is just as susceptible as the older versions, and changing manufacturers won’t make any difference. It’s the nature of the beast. It’s handier than using a lens cap, but it has its pitfalls.

Buy a used RX100 from someone on this blog. It will be clean and well cared for. Every purchase I have done here has been great!

Had the same problem with mine so I sold it at a discounted price. For that reason I would never buy another RX100

Bought a pre-owned Sony RX100 M3 from MPB which arrived last Saturday. It was rated “Good” but frankly looks like new. I have popped exactly 106 shots since its arrival and I an blown away with the picture quality and I love it.

However, about 10 times when turning on, the lens cover butterfly gets stuck partially open. I can easily open it with my finger, but still a pain.

It appears that this is a pretty common problem with this model and that there is no repair evidentially.

MPB has given me the option of returning the unit for “repair, exchange or refund.”

So, would you:

A) return and take a chance on what I might receive in exchange?
B) keep it and deal with it?
C) take the refund and move on to a different compact camera option?

And, do the newer models have the same issue?

When I bought that camera, I was advised to buy a clear cover for the lens. Consequently, I’ve never had that issue. If I were you, I would return the camera and get a newer version. Then invest in the clear lens cover to keep dust out.

In addition: I’ve always kept this camera in a sturdy little case.

I think you’d find that you would have the same problem with any other brand of camera that has that kind of lens cover mechanism. It’s not just the RX100 series.

There is an MK VII on the UHH classifieds . You might want to check to see if they have the same problem.

I have owned the Mark 4 and now own the Mark 7. I think these cameras are a terrific value for the money - even considering the fact that they are expensive. In your case, I would return the unit that you have and consider which RX100 model you want as a replacement. The lens on the Mark 7 has much more reach and overall, it is an improved version of other models. You won't be disappointed. The one thing I can tell you for sure is that you should spend the approximately $50 to buy the hard shell case that Sony sells for it. I think people who don't invest in a quality case are making a big mistake and subjecting a fine piece of equipment to unnecessary risk. Here is a link to a couple of examples. Just note that if you get the Mark 7, make sure you get the case that is designed to make the audio jack visible and not the case designed for the earlier models that didn't have the audio jack.
