my first foray into the Lone Star state was a drive from Ft Bragg to Ft Bliss. From North Carolina to the Texas border took two days. From there to Ft Bliss was another day altogether.

huge!

(had a "high plains drifter' moment when i hit the high desert ... i'd never been in one before - wow..

11 years ago I accepted a new job in Corpus Christi TX.
Set out from Los Angeles and thought I was close when I reached El Paso TX: I was already in Texas !
Comes out El Paso is exactly halfway between LA and CC, so half of my trip still to come was in Texas.
(The job lasted only 9 months and i returned happily to Los Angeles, retired beginning this year).

At least your job in TX took you to the beach!!! One of our favorite places to go is Port Aransas, just up the beach from CC.

Worked too hard to enjoy that much , but enjoyed the birds especially the pelicans which instead of diving into the (too shallow) water were skimming the water with their beaks open ready to scoop fish that way. Alas no pictures of that.

We rented a condo on the 9th floor right on the beach. The pelicans would come right past our balcony on their way to Port Aransas from Corpus. I got some nice shots of them.

I have misplaced my favorite bumper sticker, “I was not born in Texas, but I got here as fast as I could”. Bought it in one of those Texas themed gift/novelty shops, I think it was at a mall on the outskirts of Houston.

The Texas answer to that is "melt the snow and ice in Alaska and it would be the size of Rhode Island ".

Yep the trip down I-10 from Houston to LA is about 1500 miles. Half way there you are STILL in Texas! That stretch of West Texas is best done at night. As long as you are not alone. Or have a weapon.

There’s a sign on I-70 just west of Baltimore showing Cove Fort at 2200 miles. The road ends there at an intersection with I-15.

Texas is big but the Australian state of Queensland is almost 2.5 times the size of Texas and is bigger than all but 15 countries. There are quite a few jokes about the size of Texas in Australia.

I drove with my daughter from SoCal to Virginia a few years ago. We went through Texas and I didn't think it took that long and wasn't that far. However, we were on Hwy 40 travelling through the Texas Panhandle which was less than 200 miles.

I lived in El Paso for a year. 59/60'. That's a very long drive. I did it 4 times and beyond, traveling back forth to NJ. I cannot recall anything that creates a desire for me to return.
