Well, I had my hands full and the dog was wanting in the car so I laid my Fujifilm XT-4 with its 100-400mm lens on top of the car. I got everything secured and started driving away when I heard a funny noise on top of the car. I stopped and looked and gasp. My camera was still up there - I had forgotten it in the hustle & bustle of getting the dog and stool in the car. Was I lucky! I had not gone far enough on this residential road to get up speed or hit a pothole.

Happen to anyone else?

Many of us have done this as we always rush to go somewhere in a hurry. My frantic experience was in London airport about 30 years ago. My teenage son and I were ready to board the plane coming back from a vacation in Europe, as we were holding our tickets to check in the boarding line we looked at our luggages and we discovered the camera case was not with us. I had my Yashica TL electro camera in it and 20 rolls of film plus jewelry gifts from the old country. Our panic was about to hit the roof when I hear my name behind a sea of people in the boarding room. The cab driver that we used to get to the airport has found my camera case on the roof of his car. He opened the case and found a hotel receipt from our staying in Rome, that’s how he was able to called my name in that crowded place. My son had some English pounds to reward our angel person hardly enough for the fiasco we created. Those things happened to most of us as we learn about life.

I haven’t had to make choice but carrying my camera in one hand and the baby carrier in the other , or my 1777 Gragnani violin in one hand and the baby in the other , going up the 42 steps from the garage to my house , I have been asked which I would drop first if I stumbled . Luckily the baby is now an F15 pilot.

Back in '83 following a pot-luck dinner, I left the remains of my wife's "Orange Surprise", a congealed fruit salad, on the roof of our car and headed for the autobahn. After a few high speed miles I saw a flash in the rearview mirror. To this day we call that fruit salad "Autobahn Surprise".

Never a camera but an aluminum case of fishing tackle. Of course it fell off when I got up to speed but a nice guy picked it up, caught up with me and returned it. I was a college student and had no $$ for a reward so I thanked him and told him I had no money but he could have some tackle if he wanted but he graciously refused and we went our separate ways. Good morning"D-Phile,

Absolutely similar experience a few years ago. Left the house with a newly purchased ($3500.00!) Leica binocular (yes, binocular not binoculars) sitting on my car roof. About a half mile later very charming lady pulled alongside, rolled down her window and very nicely asked "do you know you have a really nice looking binocular sitting on your roof? I thanked this wonderful individual as profusely as I could from window to window and immediately retrieved my new and much more appreciated friend from its' precarious perch.
As you might guess - NEVER happened again.

Terry

If it was truly a Stradivarius, it was worth more than all the cameras in the city.

If I had s Stradivarius, I would know where it’s located every moment of everyday.

When I was a young newspaper photography in Eureka, California I put my 4X5 press camera on my car rooftop and drove off to a nearby assignment. Fortunately it made the ride and was still there when I arrived at my assignment location.

Many years later as a freelancer I secured my motorized Nikon on my car's roof top with a suction cup and fired the camera with a remote cord.

As I drove photographing traffic, I heard frantic honking and a person was frantically waving and pointing to the roof of my car. I drove to the side of the road and parked so they would know I was checking the well secured camera.

My friend Mike put his wallet on top of his truck while gassing up at Costco. He got home and couldn't find his wallet. He went back to Costco gas and their video shows that he left it on top of the truck and that it was there as he drove off. So he drove down the highway and found it. All his cards had fallen out of the wallet and were scattered on the side of the road. He found all but one card.

I was reporting to a new duty station and left a Pentax auto 110 in a cab. Lucky for me I had my name and home address in the lid. The cab driver call my parents and sent them they camera. Sad I did not have it for the trip through the Panama Canal.

My wife drove off with her laptop on top of her car. It was in a case but still received some damage -- the hinge was a little bent and didn't open as well as it should but it was still usable. I left a 20 oz. of coffee in one of those metal insulated cups on top of the car once -- it took me a minute to figure out what the noise was as it fell over and rolled the length of the car and off the back. My skill is running over my golf clubs. After a round I sat my clubs down behind the car, went to sit down in the car to change my shoes and forgot the clubs until I ran over them! I did this twice! First time I destroyed two clubs, the second time there was no club damage but the bag was busted up.

My wife drove away leaving her Lexus key on the roof of the car. She realized her mistake when she had no key upon arriving at her destination.
A replacement key had to purchased and programmed at the dealership.
Not cheap.

About 1988 I left my Alaskan Wool Shirt on top of the car after stopping for a Fresh Maple Syrup Breakfast in Garrett County, Maryland. Never saw it again. Bought a new shirt just like it.

Sadly as a paramedic I responded to a person who left their baby in a car seat sitting on top of the car roof and drove off. I will spare you the details. A vision that still haunts me.

I sadly also remember that baby left on top. It has happened more than once.

Yes, years ago. I had my Minolta 101 , and going some place. I put it temporarily on my car, and forgot.

Unfortunately I didn't realize it until I got a few blocks away. I went back and found it in to snow on the road. The camera didn't hold up to well.

I have a Minolta 100x that I took on a boat tour. One of my sons was using it on board. I had cautioned them to always use the neck strap but...
He dropped it into the sea! Fortunately the water was clear and maybe 10 feet deep. He dove overboard for it. I tried to shake the water out of it and kiss it goodbye. I wound up the roll that was inside and when I opened the back, there was NO water! All in all, that was my best well sealed camera. Original seals, maybe 15 years old at the time. That was 30 years ago and now my daughter uses it!
