Great selection of shots, with great advice as well. One of the best places to photograph.

Much like Charleston, SC where I also shoot a lot, there is an inexhaustible supply of things to photograph. One thing I haven't been brave enough to try though is something a local photographer presented to our camera club one time. He goes into the city somewhat frequently and to challenge his photography skills he will choose a single prime lens to see what all he can take at that one focal length. It sounds like a good exercise but I'm just too comfortable hauling at least a couple of zoom lenses! Thanks for your comments.

Remember the Car company, BMW? Brooklin, Manhattan & Williamsburgh, the order of the bridges over the east river going north...
NYC is OK but if given a choice I would pick Wash,DC first.
Before leaving this life, one should see NYC, Washington,DC, Colorado(RMNP) & Maine (coast & lighthouses). IMHO...

Go to the USS Intrepid CV11. My late Brother served on it. He flew S2 Trackers off it. These were Submarine Hunters. I think he was on it for its last Deployment which was a Med Run. Take a couple of photos for me.

You can get a reduced fare MetroCard if you are 65 or older. Anyone can get one, you don't need to be a resident. Since you are coming June 20th you don't have enough time to order one by mail but at 3 Stone Street in the Financial District, not far from South Ferry, is a Transit service center where you can apply. They will mail you a permanent card at your home address and will, immediately, give you a temporary card which you can load up at the nearest subway station. It should take about twenty minutes or so.

When you get the one in the mail it will be a nice souvenir and will still be good if you return to NYC.

More of this everywhere. With unemployment, people getting evicted from their homes, loss in faith of government, people buying into defunding police, more time on hand due to unemployment, loss of faith in God -- church attendance down, rising prices in food, housing, gas! This is a perfect storm for increased violence in America. I believe it will get worse before it gets better. Still, I believe NYC to be a fairly safe place to visit. In many trips to the city I have only witnessed a couple of incidents of problems. One day I was in a Pizza restaurant and there was a table of several women eating at a table toward the rear of the restaurant. One of the women went to the restroom and as she was returning to the table saw a man grab her purse from the back of the chair where she had hung it and dash out the door. She was frantic, but the purse was gone. Another time I was walking from B&H camera back to the Port Authority and saw an ambulance and a crowd of people who were being directed around some emergency personnel gathered on the sidewalk. Someone said a man had just been shot. These things could have just as easily happened in Memphis, Cleveland, Tampa, or anywhere else. Don't be afraid of the big city. Just don't stand out -- wear casual clothing of neutral colors and make sure you stay in contact with anything you are carrying. When I sit down on a bench, I loop my backpack strap over one leg. Don't set a package from a store down beside you without holding your arm over it or if it has handles, keep an arm through them. Being aware of your environment is often your best defense. Walk with a purpose. Have in mind where you want to go and don't mindlessly hang around on the street. Don't carry all your money in one pocket. Keep some money and a couple of credit cards in a money clip in your front pocket. Keep several small bills in a pocket where you can easily get to it without having to pull your wallet out and flip through several bills. Leave any credit cards you will not be using at home. Take only a couple, and again, do not keep them together.

I live in NYC the crime is very high. I would think twice about walking around and riding the subway system with a expensive camera. With that said enjoy your visit in New York with your family and stay safe.

Oh please. Crime does happen, but the chances of being involved are very low. It is largely confined to neighborhoods you won’t visit. As for the subways, ridership is increasing as people return to work. With several million riders a day, the rate is microscopic. Go and enjoy. Treat yourself to a pastrami sandwich at Katz on Houston Street.

If all those suggestions aren't enough, just go to the East Village and stand on any corner. Harry

NYC has turned into a war zone. lived and worked there 25+ years and have never seen it this bad.

My grandchildren have allowed me to visit New York City for two weeks as a retirement gift beginning June 20. The trip is primarily for photography in various locations. Following advice from many, I decided not to rent a car which means I'm on foot or using transit or Uber. I enjoy shooting skylines and street photography and open to any suggestions for shooting in safe areas.

In my google searches, I explored Coney Island, Manhattan, Ellis Island, and the Edge observation deck for the aerial look and the various burros. I'm staying in the Financial District, which seems reasonably close to the Brooklyn Bridge, which will hopefully provide views of the skyline. Any other suggestions are most welcome.

I really appreciate any advice or tips anyone can provide.

Ride the Staten Island Ferry. Visit Central Park. Don't miss the Bronx Zoo (it's one of the best in the world). The Museum of Natural History, MUMO. Plenty to see and photograph.
