Most everyone knows that 1/4 is less than 1/2 and should be able to relate it to f/4 yielding less light than f/2.
Most people don’t need to know the details (Aperture, focal length, diameter, area, etc).

How can 1/2 be more than 1/4 when everyone since preschool knows 4 is bigger than 2?

I know a number of people who don't know if 9/16 is larger or smaller than 5/8.

I understand forgetting middle-school math. But, if you're troubled with how it is that larger f-stop numbers indicate smaller apertures, you won't really ever understand WHY and will just have to accept the fact.
