Yes, they use water to soften up their food, nuts and bread and a few other things get that treatment, although much more effective with bread. You will also see them soak peanuts in the shell as their beak is not as good at opening peanuts as that of the Blue Jay. Some other of the smaller birds like the Titmouse will also do this: Many others with a beak not really suited for opening nutshells will also "dip" their food to make it easier to get the prize. By the end of the day our birdbath is often littered with various shells (peanuts and other seed we put out).
