You obviously were never around when computer programs were written before there were user and graphics interfaces. I wrote COBOL programs, as well as a bit of FORTRAN, which were updated as much as daily. And each version was carefully annotated in a form similar to the "v.x.x" format used today. No matter how well written, there are always better ways to write and execute computer commands, and we didn't have a public which was demanding "bigger, faster, better" on a daily basis.

We also didn't have competition in the same manner as today. Whether you use Adobe, Affinity, or any other editor program; or Excel or Word, there are constant updates not always visible to the user. And that doesn't begin to touch security, which may require multiple daily updates.

All caps are universally interpreted as yelling. If your eyesight needs a bigger font, set your system to a bigger font. Obviously you can read other's non-cap responses. Really, it isn't appropriate if you do not intend to yell.

As far as your post, software development is difficult. Perfection/completion does not exist. Why should we not pay for their work? Many people pay to see concerts, even playing the same songs. We buy new camera equipment, new computer, et cetera even though the old stuff works. Same thing. You do not have to upgrade--in general you can continue to use an old version (I know, you may need a new version to support a new camera, but not necessarily all the time).

Skipping the issue of 'all caps' in a posting, my opinion is that photo editing software is extremely inexpensive whether you 'purchase a license' upfront or you pay via a monthly subscription. For example, in the business world, virtually all software licenses also have a 20-22% annual maintenance fee. And if you try to avoid the maintenance fees, there are then no bug fixes or support if a major break in functionality occurs.

Currently, I use LR/PS classic via subscription so I can only say that the $9.99 + tax per month is one heck of a bargain. I did use PS Elements and paid for one new version before I change to PS/LR. Even with paying for the upgrade from Elements 6 to 11, the cost of about 8 years of use was really incidental.

In summary, if you are really annoyed to the degree you expressed, switch to GIMP or some other free ware and be happy.

The OP certainly has a point. It is true that many software companies seem to be on a yearly schedule of releasing the best-ever latest-and-greatest version of their software, at a cost to existing users. And sadly, the improvements are often only incremental and hardly worth paying for.

Then there are other companies who do not charge for bug fixes or incremental improvements, and those are worth considering. An example is Serif who produce Affinity products, including Affinity Photo.

Affinity Photo was first released in July, 2015 as version 1.3.1. Since then, Serif has released 24 update versions, all at no charge. The current version of Affinity Photo is 1.9.3. I fully expect to have to pay for version 2.X whenever it is released, but the company will have certainly earned it. Pity other companies don't follow their example of service to their customers.

I spent 20+ years working around software development -- business planning products not photography post-processing. Upfront in our licensing agreements was an understanding of what constituted a pay-for improvement release (typically the introduction of new features or capabilities -- very frequently requested by our customers) vs a corrective/maintenance release, which would have no cost attached. That's a very standard software development model -- without the ability to charge for releases with new features, there would be no new development. The addition of new technologies (lately all the "AI" features) comes with a developmental cost -- paid for by either purchasing a new release or through a subscription plan. Software development certainly ain't free as the saying goes.

Photo software is really cheap.
Auto CAD runs over $4,500 a year subscription (Only option) and Revit over $2,500 a year (Only option) and today both programs are required to stay in competitive business.

60 years ago, when I was an active duty Marine I was a teletype operator. Everything we did was all caps. Teletype machines, typewriters we used to print out the messages and the code machines we used to encrypt the messages.

When you get used to "all caps" it's an adjustment to go back to civilian typewriters. FYI, at the time my vision was 20/10.

I think you have unrealistic expectations of the computer industry. Software is intellectual property. It takes lots of time and money to design and code applications. Why should it be free?
