Whatever you charge, make sure you have a contract for limits of use.
Unless you have no problem on how and where they may use it.

What do you want to charge? A reasonable and typical licensing amount is $100 per image, especially when not dealing with combined multi-media uses like web and on a billboard and in packaging, etc.

They should want to license the image as-is, except for resizing / even re-cropping for their intended use, if applicable. If they want the RAW file and to re-edit to their own purposes, you'd be justified in saying $400 for the file as you're now giving them your original work as if they'd hired someone or done the shooting themselves. They could have hired you to do that work and had ownership of the results.

If they counter offer to $100, you can stand firm and do a bit of research to show $100 is reasonable, or be prepared with your own minimum amount to accept. If you think $100 is too low, up the price to what you think it's worth and they're willing to pay before walking away with no sale.

You really don't give enough information to even come close to a good answer. If it a personal website for friends and family it would be relatively low. If the website is commercial and the picture will be used in an advertising campaign it would be much, much, more. There are a lot of variables when it comes to determining the right price.

If $100 makes you both happy, go for it.

Your original post said client. Friends should be treated ... like friends.

Then the answer is easy. Trade for a tax return preparation. You may come out ahead of the game and everyone will hopefully be happy.

What for?
I say about $5,000 for a web site seen by millions.
$1.00 for a website seen by 3 losers.

Coincidentally, I also gave a landscape image to a friend for the home page of their accounting website. Because it was a friend, I gave it to him for free.

What is the website for? A small school? A friend's new restaurant? A local government? A humanitarian group?
A Fortune 500 company?
