Being proud of ignorance is never a good thing.

I actually FORGET that I can take pictures with my phone. Maybe that’s because I always carry my Sony RX100viii with me. It’s just as easy to grab that camera as it is to grab a phone...and the results are WAY better (I think).

The exception to this is when I take pictures of gear I want to sell. It’s just a little simpler to use the phone camera for this. The phone cameras have gotten better. I still carry the iPhone XS and my grandkids say the camera in version 12 is even better. I won’t become a convert, though.

Of course, for special occasions, I carry the BIG camera and the best lens/lenses for the job.

I know to each his/her own but for me the gear is the most important thing. I have fun with the gear sometimes I enjoy having great gear sometimes it's the fun of make lousy gear work. Don't make me a good photographer but give me lots of fun. That's what counts.

Yep; I have a Leica IIIc that hasn't seen a roll of film in many, many years. But it's fun to look at and handle. A marvelous little machine.....the pleasures of gear....

The tools suit the craftsman, I enjoy using good ones. I haven't owned a cell phone since shortly after I retired. Photography is an important part of every trip, and I carry a full kit, cameras, lenses and bits & pieces. Personal choice. Phones are a part of the present world, IMO as much a detraction as addition.

I agree completely. I enjoy using fine equipment whether it be cameras, firearms, quality knives and so on. In camera selection I enjoy using Nikon, Leica, Hasselblad etc. I am not saying my photos are necessarily better due to my camera choice but my enjoyment from using those and similar cameras does heighten my experience. To me that matters.

I have traveled Europe and places in America carrying a couple of cameras with a reserve of lenses in the bag over my shoulder. While I do not do that any longer I do still take at least one of my better cameras, maybe a Nikon D800 and a quality lens such as the 24-85, you and I and others have mentioned several times. Using a cell phone for trip of a lifetime photos does not interest me.

As a wise man once said: Photography is 80% mental, and the other half is the camera.

Most Photographers are mental. 80% of them don't use half of their camera.

I went on a cruise a couple years ago in the Mediterranean. It was a great cruise. I did not take a DSLR, only my iPhone.

The scenery photos I got were just fine. The photos taken in dim light were (in my opinion) Not Good. The images were smeared out (not by motion blur) and although they were usable with downsampling, they just didn't meet my expectations. The DSLRs I have do just fine in similar conditions. My cruise photos are merely personal memories, not saleable items or important to the family history.

I have heard that newer iPhone models do better, but I am not about to buy a new iPhone every time they come up with a new one.

Went to a wedding 2 weeks ago. Took the DSLRs. Since I was in the wedding party I could only use the iPhone for some of the photos but after the ceremony I switched to the DSLR. Night and day in picture quality.

I am convinced that good equipment is essential in some cases (where good images are essential). The iPhone is fine for casual shots, which probably constitute more than half of my photos.

Interesting observations. I was in asia and many of the countries. Very visual ops everywhere.
I use my iPhone and it serves a purpose. To record things I want to save. And to capture moments
in life and family. I stayed with the iPhone 7s waiting to move up. I see cell phones being used
"as I was here" photography.
I wonder why some of the superb smaller camera's would have served you better. I am now using Fuji
gear. But the Sony mirrorless camera's for instance are great small travel and create camera's.
The RX100 series (I now still have the 4) are just amazing and all metal. Their stills and video with
Sony's great 1" sensor is just great. The 4 (The newer ones have added tech great stuff) has a viewfinder
zoom lens and great features. A Sony 6000 series is small and has great short automatic zoom lens.
I had the 6300 and when I was a guest at the school party awards for a FL school. The Chamber's
leader said we are stuck Tom would you shoot some stills these great kids getting awards and having
fun.Had the 6300 with the 16 to 70 zeiss lens and the shots were really good. I carried a small business
case and the camera and lens will fit anywhere.
The newer smart phones are tricked up with algorithms that can make automatic shots.
Don't know how many times I found my finger in shots.
Just a thought. PS The Fuji street camera's are just wonderful. Small slim and fixed 23mm gorgeous lens.
Just my thought. Glad your had a great trip. Stay safe.

Not all photographers do it as a "trade".
