When the marketing department came up with the name:
"Junk Tripod"
The accountants weren't too happy.
It was henceforth re-branded as:
"Pro Tripod"
And everyone was happy ever after.

More and more I am seeing (mainly on ebay of course) but also in retail outlets such ads as

"PRO studio flash units" £65 ($104)
Pro, are you kidding, do people really believe for one moment (or fall for) that just because someone has written "professional" on something that it really is?
They do. That is why they advertise it that way.

Oh yes indeed they do JR1! These days you may notice that such misleading adverts are cropping up everywhere, including the free to air TV stations. They must work because they couldn't afford to advertise otherwise. Cold callers on the phone landlines, on the mobiles and in the post, it's becoming an annoyance to wake up in the mornings.
What have we created with this digital age?
rts2568
I remember the ads saying that 8 out of 10 doctors preferred Camel cigarettes. So, I for one won't buy anything unless it says Professional, tactical, extreme or gen-u-wine.

You're not far from the truth Irontruck.
Somebody wil be sure to suggest 'sheep'. They won't be far wrong either.
What I find annoying about this level of deceipt in advertising is that it catches out the inexperinced young.

As we have often heard, "There is a sucker born every minute." It never ceases to amaze me when I hear of well educated people being victimized by scams that seem so obvious that no one should ever fall for them but, they do.
You should watch the movie Crazy People with Dudley Moore. He plays an ad executive who ends up in a mental institution. He and his fellow patients come up with an ad campaign that really would be a breath of fresh air, truth in advertising. How about slogans like, "Buy our cars, they suck less." :D

"We suck less" is in an actual ad I heard on the radio.

JR1, you have started a great discussion. This will give a lot of hogs the opportunity to vent about a subject that annoys all of us. Thanks
Any company can add the word PRO to anything. You have Quickbooks PRO, you have Windows PRO. I think PRO has become the buzz word of the 2000's.
I equate this to see tubafors on sale for .98 cents. You go into the lumber store and look at the .98 cent ones and then look at the 2.98 ones...you pay for quality.
If you see a tripod for 40.00 and a Manfroto for 200.00, both with the words PRO in the descrpition, which one is better...well gee they both are PRO...NOT

After having worked in the photographic retail biz for a few years, I can say that with very few exceptions, one should avoid any product with the word "Pro" in the product name.
The real way to tell professional-quality stuff is usually the price!
Once again the Cap'n nails 'er down. Often when you see the word "pro" involved with photo gear...you should head on down to your local hardware store...It's most likely in there someplace for a lot less money and sometimes even a better solution...
