You should be able to get an "all-risk" insurance rider on your homeowners insurance. USAA calls it a "Valuable Personal Property" rider. I wouldn't travel without it. It covers theft and "mysterious disappearance. It paid off a few years ago for me when I had a Sony RX100 stolen off a bench where my wife had sit it down alongside her. USAA reimbursed me while we were still on the Baltic cruise.

Thank you you’re the first person to mention that. I will definitely be going my insurance company. It kind of takes the pressure and the fear I loosing my new M10.
Everyone on the form has been so helpful, you’re the first person to explain the insurance situation. Again thank you and you’ve done your good deed for the day!

My pleasure - I have all my gear insured and never have to worry about taking it with me or it getting stolen or destroyed - its well worth the money for the piece of mind.

Most of the insurance riders that I looked at would cost me more than replacing the equipment after about 2 years of premiums. Is that still true? I usually just set aside a little money for replacement each month and over time still have the cash for gear when it breaks or gets antiquated.

That has not been my experience with State Farm at all. Like I said, it ends up being like 2% per year.

Hello,

A couple things to look at here before your trip date approaches:

1) Check to see if your homeowners policy covers a scenario if your equipment were to be stolen. Ask if you can add the replacement value of your equipment to your policy.
2) Strictly contact a camera insurance company to have the value of your equipment insured. There are forums on this site that talk about such companies.
3) Rent a loaner camera and take out their lost/stolen insurance.
4) Both you and your Daughter should consider purchasing some kind of pepper spray. I would recommend the brand POM. Im not sure if its legal to use there. Check online to see if you can obtain that information. As well Check with your airline carrier to see if you can even pack it into your checked bag.
5) Don't fall prey to your surroundings by playing music on earphones or headphones.
6) I would also consider buying this SABRE self-defense safety loud dual siren(on Amazon),or a similar device of your choice that fits your budget.
7) Don't leave any gear in plain sight on seats of your rental car!
8) Have a wonderful safe trip and exercise common sense especially when in foreign territory. You as well should always do things in a group setting to keep the predators away.. Now get out there and fire away!

Most major cities in the world, including in the US, have that same problem. It’s not just Paris. Use common sense. Don’t load up all your gear in a bag and drag it along behind you, you probably won’t need a lot of gear anyway. Don’t leave your camera loose, keep it around you neck or across your body, even while eating. You bought that Leica for a reason, use it.

Agree entirely. I found Paris to be no more dangerous than any US city of comparable size.

Thank you for all of your advice.
I have travelled the world for the last 40 years to all kinds of countries and am I am not a novice.
What has changed? A $10,00 dollar camra with accessories, in three years I turn 70 years old. I like shooting at night street scenes often in the prone position. So as much as I appreciate advice for regular tourists that’s not what I’m going to be doing. I wished for advice If it was a good idea to do what I was doing at my age

No matter what your age, no matter what your previous travel experiences, and no matter what your photographic experience, it never hurts to ask to see if one missed some new information of value.
