New Camera--Things I Like About my new 5Dsr

New Canon 5Dsr
1st-- I like that I can adjust the crop. I can leave my 7D2 at home because I can instantly set the crop to 1.6x. Now if I need a little more reach I can have it w/o carrying two cameras.
2nd--I really like that I can program the mirror lock up so I press the shutter and the mirror locks up and 2 seconds later the shutter takes the picture. Wow.
3rd--I like that I can quickly reduce the image quality. If I don't need a 50mp image I can drop the image quality quickly to 28mp.
4th--I like that I can do extreme cropping and still have a high quality image.
I'm sure I'll find other things that make me glad I bought this model. I hope my 5D3 and 7D2 don't get jealous for lack of attention.

As someone who admits to heavy cropping now and then, I truly appreciate your satisfaction. The 5Dsr and 5Ds are getting harder and harder to find. The Canon refurb site has been out of stock for some time, now. Not to worry about the 5d3 and 7d2, as soon as you pick them up, they will happy just to be held. 😎

It’s great to hear when one is happy with their equipment. I used my Leicaflex SL Wednesday and felt the same thrill as when I bought it in 1969. May your 5Dsr serve you as long.

Absolutely !

And, scavenger that I am, I benefit from the effect that has on its used price. Got mine from right here in Hogsville :-)

Mine had 30K on it when I bought it and since I’m not using it as my general use camera, it may never get to 60K in my limited use. IOW whenever I don’t need 50MP I’m using something else.

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

While I’m not a believers that 50MP needs only the best premium lenses, acoarst I agree it needs better than average. So I acquired a set of primes from 24 to 150, all of which have IS.

Nonzooms stopped down a coupla stops plus the IS is definitely more than sharp enough for 50MP. Again scavenger that I am, thaz 5 lenses for the price of one ... one of those ultra premium lenses that the herd mind insists is mandatory.

That was my primary birding camera until I purchased an R5, it was a great camera for me, the ability to crop allowed for images that you just couldn't get with other full frame cameras. A bit noisy but there is software out there that will handle that. Now all you need is a really great lens, I used a 500/4 and eventually replaced that lens with a 300/2.8 and carry the 1.4 and 2X extenders. That is a bit of money to spend but there are alternatives, I can promise you that if you don't already have it that you will be very happy with the 100-400 II.

I'm glad you're enjoying your new camera!

But, you know, there's absolutely no difference between doing an in-camera crop and doing the same crop later in post-processing. Either way you end up with the same thing.

However, an advantage to NOT doing an in-camera crop is that you have option to change your mind. If you just take full frame images with the 5DS-R you will later be able to crop less, or to reposition the crop, or to not do the crop at all. None of these are options when an in-camera crop has been done by using the camera set to 1.6X crop mode.

And I still think your 7DII might still prove its worth in some ways...
... a much faster continuous shooting rate (10 fps vs 5 fps)
... higher durability rating (200,000 shutter actuations vs 150,000)
... much higher selectable ISO (100-16000 vs 100-6400)
... a somewhat more advanced AF system (65 AF points, all cross type vs 61 AF points, 41 cross type)
... 7DII has a separate chip driving it's AF system (as do 1D & 1DX models), while AFAIK the 5RS-R does not.
... 7DII has Dual Pixel AF in Live View, which Canon omitted from the slightly later 5DS cameras.
... both have dual Digic 8 processors, to support the speed of the 7DII and to support the sheer file size in 5DS-R
... 7DII buffer can handle more images: 103 JPEGs/ 25 RAW versus 28 JPEGs/15 RAW in 5DS-R
... 7DII has a faster flash sync: 1/250 versus 1/200 in 5DS-R

I'm not saying your new 5DS-R isn't a great camera.... It certainly is! (I've been shopping for a 5DS myself) I think it may be the ideal tool for some things, while the 7DII can be more ideal for other stuff. For example, the 7DII is optimized for sports/action photography, while the 5DS-R competes with medium format digital for landscape/architecture work and some other photography where extreme enlargement might be wanted. While they have a lot of commonalities and cross-over, the two cameras are arguably best-suited to slightly different purposes.

Incidentally, the "pixel pitch" of 5DS-R/5DS and 7DII is identical. If you were able to scale up the 7DII's 20MP APS-C sensor to full frame, you'd end up with the 5DS' 50MP full frame resolution. A minor difference is that the 7DII has some Dual Pixel AF sites embedded directly in its imaging sensor, while the 5DS cameras do not.

You are so right. I totally agree. The 7d2 is my birding camera, especially for BIF's. And since you can't buy a new 7d2, there is no way I would part with it. . .EVER.

I wouldn’t change from 50 mp down to 28 mp. My first pics I cropped with my 36mp blow me away vs my 23mp. Congrats to your new gear. I love my pro camera too

Yup. I have verrrrry little use for SLRs anymore, but despite that, my 5DSR is a recent acquisition. I bought 3 more IS primes to help it see the world somewhat better without lugging a tripod. (Already had one IS prime so it’s a quartet now, from 24 to 150mm.)
