A good addition is to have a software that allows you to make a full image of your drive. The image can be restored at any time to another drive as well as allow access individuals files and directories. I suggest you download Macrium Reflect Home (free, from www.macrium.com ). Do a full weekly copy and on the days you download a lot of content and disconnect the external drive when finished to prevent a possible ramsonware to block access to your files.

Cheers

Hold on! The issue here is not backup. It is about operating drives while using the program. I like a nice backup plan as much as the next geek, but let's not loose focus what the OP needs to know; how switch to a new external drive for using LR.

Sure but it is great to move to a new hard drive using an image. It is easy and safe and as you said a backup strategy is a must and having it for free and from a great software better yet.

With an image it would be just a matter to connect the new HD and restore the image made.

If you can get two for the price (and effort) of one, why not?

Cheers

I do not disagree, I just do not want to see the thread hijacked before the OP is satisfied that the issue is solved. And backup strategies is almost as big a hijack cause as RAW vs JPEG.
