Use my Canon EOS 6D Mark II or my Sony ILCE-A7R4 For Indoor Soccer Low Light Home Opener?

I love both of my full frame cameras, but on June 5th, I have to choose which one to use to shoot the home opener game and have the images published.

I have practiced recently with both cameras and I an attaching one image from each camera for your evaluation and recommendation as to which image is the best for the event. Image #1 with the two players is from the Canon and Image #2 with one player is from the Sony. Which image do you recommend for publication? What say, "Ye?"

The low light performance of the Sony is a just a little better (<1/4 stop), and the dynamic range is a lot better at low ISOs, but if you’re at ISOs above 1,000, they’re roughly equal. I think it would come down to which body has the bast fast tracking AF (that is not the Canon’s strong suit, and I don’t have experience with the Sony), and which you have the best fast lens of the right FL for. I don’t see a lot of difference in the two images, but I do think I see more noise on the Canon on high contrast edges. I see they were shot at similar ISOs and the same aperture. Which “feels best in your hands” for fast action shooting? Which do you have the most experience with? You could take both... what lenses are you using?

Both look good to me. I would use whichever camera has the best focus tracking for moving subjects.

Dear Robdur...

The Sony seems to have the best focus tracking for moving subjects, but I am going to turn 80 in September and I am having trouble remembering what I learned shooting during the 2019-2020 season. I am using back camera focusing, but having trouble using automatic focus on both cameras. Last time out my camera was focused on the far wall the entire game and 2018 exposures. I can't figure out how to use AI focus AF and keep the center focus square in the middle of my screen all the time. Each time when I take a look, the focus square is clear off in the corner of the screen and have to finger it back into the middle of the screen. Do you know a way to lock it in place in the center of the screen so that it stays there and I only have to position the camera so that the focus square stays with the subject and I can shoot away with the image staying in focus on the player when the player moves?
