New Sony A7Riii camera.

I stay way clear of that dial. Absolutely NEVVUH touch it. It’s radioactive with Ebola. To raise or lower the exposure I press the toggled AEL button and alter the aperture or shutter.
I like your sense of humour User ID. As I said in reply to another UHH member, I will seek adult supervision before handling the camera again.

I recently purchased a new Sony A7Riii camera and Sony 24-105 f/4 lens. I can change shutter speed or aperture independently in manual mode but when I try to use either aperture or shutter speed priority both change when I rotate either the front or rear dials. Is this a "Sony" thing or am I missing something. I am not using auto ISO.
What have I missed when setting up the camera?
Please note that due to the time difference between Australia and the rest of the world I will be off line for several hours before I can respond to any posts in answer to this.

That’s the nature of Aperture priority. You pick the aperture and the camera picks the shutter speed. That’s when you are NOT in auto ISO. if you switch to auto ISO, then only the aperture changes.
I have this camera and I just tested it. Also, either the front dial OR the back dial will change the aperture. When you use manual mode, the front dial changes the aperture and the back dial changes the shutter speed. This is true whether you are in auto ISO or not.
Hope this helps.
Edit: I see that I’m a little late to the party. I’m glad you figured it out. The best thing about the Sony menu is the option of putting your most used (and often lost) settings in the MY MENU.

Richard, just saw you are from Alice Springs. I sure wish I could get to Aussie Land and A.S. would be one of the first places on my bucket list. Have heard a lot about it and even checked it out on Google Earth a bit. Have fun down there, Mate!
I hope international travel will eventually allow you to fulfill your wish SonyBug.
In the mean time here are a couple of photos of the West MacDonnell Ranges near Alice Springs to wet your appetite. These were taken about one month after heavy rain fell on much of Central Australia, thus the green tint and water in the normally dry Finke River.

After a few hours sleep I realize that the camera is behaving exactly how it should. My excuse is that I had just spent several hours doing battle with the unfamiliar Sony menus.
It’s important to be able to deflect. I also rely on, “why do they do this?”

Thank you greyfox. I am okay now ...... I think.
That’s exactly how those modes work. If you’re in aperture priority and you change the aperture it will change the shutter speed also to maintain the exposure. Vice versa for shutter priority.

You've mentioned a "gray" minute or a "dumb" moment. You have my permission to use what I stole from someone else over 20 years ago. Call those mental lapses "Intellectual Interludes" and you can use that for years and years, from whatever years you're going through now until your 80's - like me.

What you describe is normal behaviour when in those modes.

That would be normal camera behavior, not yours

You might need to explain better. If you're in Aperture Priority and change the aperture say from f/4 to f/8, you'd expect the shutterspeed to adjust dynamically as well so the camera can maintain the same exposure as the photographer adjusts the dominate exposure setting of the mode being used. That is, for ISO 100 at f/4 and 1/100 is the same exposure as ISO-100 at f/8 and 1/50. If you change from f/4 to f/8 for a fixed ISO, the camera will adjust the shutterspeed.
If you mean rather the dials on the front of the camera and the rear of the camera both adjust the same setting, literally titled the 'front' and 'rear' dials, welcome to Sony a7 camera models ...

You can simply assign any of the dials to either aperture or shutter speed or both. Please read and understand the manual and help guides. Its Sony's ability to be customized better than any other camera that is one of the reasons I switched to Sony from Canon back in January 2017 and have never regretted it. FYI, I have owned Sony A6500, A7RII, A7RIII, A7III, A9 and now own Sony A1, A7SIII and A7RIV.

You know Chg Cannon I would love to move to Sony mirrorless but just can't really justify the cost after my Nikon investment. Maybe in a couple years when mirrorless irons out some more issues I may rethink my stance. Right now my cameras are better than me so why start over? Kind of like my gemcutting. I cut fantasy stones now along with standard cuts. I laid down the money for the equipment. Only difference is it pays for itself. Google fantasy cut stones if you are not familiar.
