Excellent piccies, and Qedlingburgh is a particularly quaint old German town (a very nice restaurant up by the castle) the reason for the over hang on each floor is that back in the dark ages tenants were taxed only on the floor (ground) they used, so they built each floor bigger, the sunburst’s are a “happy/hopefull” symbol for any forthcoming harvest, clever people those Germans

Thank you for looking in on my ongoing series Alan and your kind and informative comments. I didn't know about the reasons for the floor overhangs, but it certainly does make sense. Don't know about that restaurant up on the hill, but we had excellent fare in a place just off the main square - I will be showing a couple of pictures of our food in tomorrows post. Have a great day - Joe

Thank you Susan - yes old age, but well built and well maintained, so except for a few expected "wrinkles" like in uneven floors, etc, these seem to be doing very well.

I love your architecture shots, Joe. The colors, perspectives, everything—wonderful! Oh, if those buildings could talk.

Thank you Ellen for your kind words, much appreciated. Yes, I agree: what stories they could tell, collected over the ages!

Returning from the New Town to the market square in the Old Town, we take a slightly different route and pass through the Stieg quarter, with more interesting buildings and a street rather ominously called "Hölle" (Hell). There is a restaurant here called "Heaven and Hell" which I assume might make for interesting menu selections, and there is also a pizzeria called "Hell" - I guess here you can get either a "hell of a pizza" - or "a pizza from hell" - your choice to decide or maybe the pizza baker will have his input.

Returning from the New Town to the market square i... (show quote)

Marvelous and absolutely none replicable urban art. I just caught myself thinking that the citizens of this town probably treat these real artifacts similarly to the way we treat the sky scratchers here in NY...Thanks , Joe!
