Images online look different to PS

Hi all.

A question for anyone who can help please.

I get my images just the way I want them in PS, I have checked them on my second pc on both the tiff and the Jpeg I save for each but when then loaded online they look a little different. For example in this image below the area on PS has the light from the sun blended perfectly into the sky but when loaded to my flickr you can see that the colour is easy to notice in layers and no smooth blend:-

Can anyone pin point my error? I have PS shop set as sRGB and putting it back down to 8bit before saving the j peg I upload but it makes no difference....I have just checked this on my work pc and it looks the same :(

Thanks in advance

Roan

Easy. In Photoshop you are working on a file with minimal compression - even if it is a jpg. The process of compressing that file to load and display on the web means there are fewer colors to allow for a smooth transition. You did nothing wrong and this is unavoidable.

Hi Cliff,

Thanks for that, so is this what I have read about the file in PS being over 4000 different levels but J peg only having 256?

Would it mean I could get round it if I blended it a bit better?

Thanks again

The 256 colors is only part of it. An uncompressed ( or compressed at quality 11 or 12) file with 256 colors still looks pretty good - it it the further size reduction/compression for web use that does it. One way to hide it a bit is to add noise, believe it or not. That tends to even out the blends.

Or you can add a slight gaussian blur to the sky area. That too will even the blends a bit.

What about reducing the size of the image to be posted to something like 300 pixels?

Thank you for the info....someone suggested that I should also try changing some PS settings to be best and sharpened for web use. I don't suppose you know how this is done?

I guess inverting a layer mask with some blur and painting that in is a good idea and seems a simple solution. I just wish I could get it the way I want it so I don't have to upload then see there is an issue to change then fix and try over.
