First of all let me correct you, the new Sony 35mm f1.4 GM is NOT a Zeiss lens. It is a Sony GM lens and none of Sony GM lenses are Zeiss lenses. GM lenses are wholly designed and made by Sony. Early Sony-Zeiss collaborations had Zeiss help Sony design some of their first fullframe mirrorless lenses, but Sony and Zeiss make no new lenses in collaboration anymore. So while you can still buy some Sony-Zeiss lenses, there are no new ones from that collaboration.

This is correct. The older Sony/Zeiss Distagon 35mm f/1.4 ZA still is a fine lens. However, the new Sony 35mm f/1.4 GM is setting a new standard for 35mm. I would pick the GM over the Sony Zeiss or the Sigma.

I have the Sony A7riii (just got it) and I want to get a fast high-quality 35mm for it. I am considering the new Sony Zeiss 35mm f1.4 GM lens versus the Sigma Art f1.2 lens. I have other Zeiss and Sigma lenses (for my Sony A6500) and am very pleased with both. Ignoring price difference for now, what are your thoughts about those two lenses? Thanks.

I have the Sigma Art 35 f/1.4 and love it. It’s my go to lens for indoor portraits and those dark church events! I’m not sure how much better the f1.2 would be for twice the price. Sorry, I guess I’m not much help.

Sigma's latest lest iterations are optically equal if not better than Sony's. Where they fall short is the focus speed and accuracy. This is mostly true for all 3rd party lenses compared to native equivalents, regardless of brand.

Another wrinkle in brand vs Sigma Art. The Art lenses are compatible with the Sigma Hub. This means you can (in addition to having access to software updates) adjust some features that you cannot with Brand lenses. The extent of those adjustments depends on the lens. Just something to keep in mind.

The reality is that the new Sigma Art DG DN lenses for Sony are just as accurate in focus as my best Sony GM lenses, but are just a tad slower in focus speed in AF-C. But the miniscule difference in focus speed vs the best Sony lenses is NOT enough to cause you to lose a shot.

I know this from real-world experience with both my Sigma Art DG DN lenses and my best Sony GM lenses. That is why I had no hesitation to sell my Sony 24-70mm f2.8 GM and my Sony 85mm f1.4 GM and I bought the superior Sigma Art 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN and the superior Sigma Art 85mm f1.4 DG DN and love them both for my A1, A7RIV and A7SIII.

Cheers

The truth is that older Sigma Art lenses in EF and other non-Sony mounts could use a Sigma Dock for adjustments. But the new Sigma Art and Sigma Contemporary lenses in native E-mount DO NOT have any Sigma dock for them. Sigma makes no E-mount Sigma dock. All software updates and any adjustments now work like native Sony lenses with the lens mounted on the Sony camera and a USB cable from the camera into your computer, and adding firmware updates or changes that way, same as OEM Sony lenses now.

There is only a Sigma dock for Sony A-Mount lenses, none for E-mount, though it had been rumored over a year ago, but not made.

Did not know that. Given the popularity of Sony, you would think they would offer that.

A dock isn't necessary if you can update firmware and make adjustments with the Sigma E-mount lenses mounted on the Sony camera and done through your computer. Cheers
