Since i'm one who does a lot of flower work i never get bored by seeing other work (i.e. old hippy) they want me to do better. I like looking a some of the eagles shots and wish i had some to work with.

Of the set I find the headless manikins to be the most interesting. Nothing wrong with mall shots but I prefer something like these done with a "street photography" point of view showing people doing their thing in the mall. BTW - I agree with the flowers and birds being overdone around here to the point of becoming "ho-hum".

Dennis, I had to read the first paragraph over a couple of times because I sincerely thought something was WrOnG!!!! Very creative writing! I know one thing for sure, in a mall if I show up with a DSLR the mall security will talk with me and not allow me to take photos. They have their rules that they are getting paid to uphold. Dennis, I promise I will stick to what I know.........Having said that, I want you to know that I will NEVER stop looking for new and different subjects to photograph. And ALWAYS on the lookout for when I hear "knock, knock, knock"........yep, that's opportunity knocking!

I hate to say it, but sometimes I get an overdose of flower and bird photos here. Maybe I need to analyze it......maybe because the photographer lives out in the country and there is nothing else interesting enough to shoot? I know it's spring time and the flowers are in bloom and the birds are out in force. Maybe I'm spoiled because I live in Southern California and there always seems to be something to photograph? Today I took my cell phone out in the local mall and photographed random subjects that I thought were interesting. Now I'm wondering if my photos are boring to you?! To me, they were interesting enough to photograph. Am I being weird? Are they hopelessly boring to you as the flowers and birds are to me? I have a photographic motto: "No snapshots". Do you find any of these photos interesting?

Just trying to understand your concerns Brent as it seems all you post are surfing photos. What’s the difference?
I enjoy your photos of your environment, if others photos bore you, don’t look at them.

Jimmy, I asked for honesty and I believe you gave it to me. Thank you for that. Nothing you said sounded harsh, only truthful and that is exactly what I asked for. Thanks again.

Ouch, Brent:
I REALLY hated to say ANYTHING negative since I admire 99.9% of your pics and aspire to do as well.
To beat everything you are humble and polite too.
I feel like such a mean person now.
I may always wear my mask in public now, sigh.

Disclaimer, I am not a professional photographer or critic.

What I find slightly boring about your photos in this thread is there seems to be no one in the mall, and begs the question, was it closed? Unless you purposely avoided people to avoid the potential for legal problems, that is the only criticism I have. I think the photos are well composed, lighted and exposed.

I didn't even consider people in my photo adventure to the mall. I think the mall is dying and this was a weekday and right after it opened for the day, so there are three reasons why you don't see much people activity.

Jimmy, you said what I asked you to say: Honesty! Please don't feel bad at all. I knew these photos were not "gallery quality" photos. My point of showing these photos was only to show that we don't have to show boring photos. And I wondered if my photos were boring.

I understand, you want to attempt to be more Creative, something different, Trees, Flowers, Beautiful Landscapes, get kind'a Stale after awhile, Right?
So this is what you set your Photographic Eye on, The Mall, maybe even a Dying Mall, did not look to Busy. Amazon and other ONLINE Stores are Killing the Malls around the USA.
Thanks for the Tour, some interesting shots, but I do feel sorry for Sears, J.C.Penney, Hudson's, Kaufman's, Gimbels, so many others I grew up, getting my new School Clothes each August, back in the 1950's when I was a young Lad.
One day your Photos will be looked at amazing time in History, when it was an exciting time Going to the Mall.
Thanks for Sharing. Now back to Trees, Flowers & Beautiful outdoor Landscapes.
Oops!! I forgot K-MART & Woolworth, kreskcae Co.

Sorry Brent, it's the subject matter. I only go to the mall with my wife. I go because I have to, not because I like to.

SalvageDiver, you are going to the mall for the right reasons! Good job!

Sets like this interest me because they give an insight on the eye of the photographer. I have a regular exercise, to try to find interesting photos in prosaic locations. Think of it as a self Sharpener. In a big box store parking lot, outside of the Spa waiting for my wife, walking around a neighborhood having gotten to a restaurant too early for the reservation, etc. I don't buy photos, or hang photos other than my own, so those evaluations are out. The set is professionally executed and gives a feeling for the place. That's all I can say.

Pablo, I can see it if you had a job and you had to get out there and photograph subjects that you were not really interested in.........I hope you still tried to aproach the responsibility with a creative slant on it.
BTW, what is 'Blinkered-view'??

The 'Blinkered-View' that some people have of their own photographs, which have obvious basic faults (Technical, focus, exposure, composition, presentation. blown highlights, etc.,etc.) Often the pictures are accompanied by a 'Glowing' explanation of how and why the photographs were taken. When they actually show how badly they are representing good photo' skills.

The one thing I see "wrong" with these pix is that they are unpopulated. The essence of a mall, or city center or even a park, is the human activity within. Here's the one and only mall shot I've ever taken. It was taken ~1974 in one of Detroit's largest malls. (Nikon FTn, on Ektachrome.) As someone who enjoys architectural photography, it just seem obvious to me that the spaces I shoot should usually (but certainly not always) be occupied.

BTW, I love your surfing pix; but without people, they'd just be pretty pix of waves.

Well Brent, I guess it is pretty clear that folks aren't big fans of photographs of the inside of mostly peopleless shopping malls. I wonder if some of the selections would have been better received had they been in B&W. I did notice that in the Hurley headless mannequin shot that there was a color photograph of a surfer behind the two guys that look like it could have been taken by you. I do not think that every photograph has to make an artistic statement. Sometimes an image is made to record a scene for posterity. In the case of your mall images, I'm afraid that they come up short on the "artistic" side of the ledger as well as on "making a record" side of the ledger. Thanks for posting these and thanks in general about being an all around agreeable guy. Some folks can get rather "prickly" on this forum. You remain always affable and that is appreciated.

RodeoMan, thanks for your interest in these photos and your thoughts. Thanks also for saying I could have been the photographer for the background photo with the Hurley mannequin shot. I think you are right about saying it's pretty clear that folks aren't big fans of photographs of the inside of mostly peopleless shopping malls.
